The Conflict Action Research Network (CARN) was established in 2012 as an initiative of Creative University and more broadly, as a corporate initiative of Creative Associates International. CARN will synergize knowledge between academics and development practitionersin order to generate cutting edge, creative and innovativeaction research on the drivers of conflict and instability. CARN aims to not only advance the overall state of knowledge on peace and security, but also improve the quality of program design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of successful field programs in conflict-prone environments, in both a cost-effective and efficient manner.By facilitating active collaboration between academics and practitioners, the network will directly target the so-called the “chasm” claimed to exist between those “who observe and theorize about a subject and those who practice it”. Thus, CARN will facilitate an iterative research process that not only moves from theory to practice, but also practice to theory, linking two concurrent, yet independent trends in research: engaged scholarship (within theAcademy) and purpose-driven research (within development interventions). The Conflict Action Research Network (CARN) provides unique, short-term, action research-oriented fellowships to graduate students in conflict analysis and resolution, international development, and other related fields. CARN seeks to support a more secure and stable world by giving talented students who are interested in a career in the development field an opportunity to increase and deepen their knowledge, as well as gain exposure to the real-world practice development in conflict-affected settings within Creative Associate’s programs. In this way, CARN hopes to foster leaders within the next generation of practitioners and scholar-practitioners working within the conflict-development nexus.
