About Sara Thornton

I’m a wetland social-ecologist with an interest in human-environment relationships, interdisciplinary research approaches, debates surrounding sustainable development and the role of different knowledges in conservation research and management. I take a critical approach to my work; continuously thinking about justice issues, the ethics of conservation approaches and how we can imagine and create a more caring world for human and more-than-human beings alike.I completed my PhD at the University of Leicester (School of Geography, Geology and the Environment) with Borneo Nature Foundation. My interdisciplinary PhD evaluates the importance of fish(ing) to human communities in the Sabangau (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia) using Assemblage Theory as a framework. This also involved completing some of the first long-term fish and water quality surveys in the Sebangau River and Forest. At WWT I provide technical support to our international programmes in Madagascar and Cambodia. I also support the Wetland Learning Hub (https://wetlandlearninghub.org/) with course design, as a lecturer and M&E lead. You can see my WWT profile here:https://www.wwt.org.uk/our-work/wetland-conservation-unit/meet-the-team/sara-thornton/I'm also a trustee of Freshwater Life Project: https://freshwaterlifeproject.org/For a more complete list of my publications please see my Google Scholar or Researchgate profiles:GS: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=fi7U9zsAAAAJ&hl=enRG: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sara_Thornton3

(Un)tangling the Net, Tackling the Scales and Learning to Fish in the Sabangau Assemblage: An Interdisciplinary Case Study in Indonesian BorneoMy PhD explores interdisciplinary approaches to conservation in Indonesian Borneo, using a case study of peatland fish and human fishing communities in the Sabangau (Central Kalimantan). My thesis considers the critiques surrounding the ecosystem service paradigm, and challenges dichotomies and hierarchies that are often imposed between different knowledge systems (‘local’ versus ‘scientific’ knowledge) and between academic disciplines (‘social’ and ‘natural’ sciences). I conducted the first detailed fish and river surveys in the area, accompanied by questionnaire surveys, focus groups and in-depth interviews in two local human communities that explored the importance of fish(ing), perceptions of environmental changes and challenges in relation to fish and livelihoods (such as increasing human populations, intensifying fishing practices and persistent use of fire) and cultural and spiritual relationships to the river and fish.
