About Thorsten Beckmann

Big questions have made me feel overwhelmed in the past... How can we live sustainably and prosperous within the planetary boundaries? How can we improve treatments for certain diseases? ... Today I believe that I can have a contribution and strive to be part of the solution. Read along if you want to know what does pure mathematics has to do with all of this ;-)BACKGROUNDI have always been fascinated by complex systems. Combined with my fondness for analytic thinking, I decided to pursue a PhD in pure mathematics. I nurtured wonder for science and learned how I can best tap into my creative potential. Tackling problems and solving big questions with others turned out to be my jam. During this phase I got more and more concerned with the pressing issues our society is facing and realized that I want to use my skills to help tackle the challenges we are facing.TURNAROUNDAlthough a quite promising path within academy glowed in front of me, I decided to experience how that mission would feel like. After embarking in coaching and personal development sessions I reached out to like-minded folks to understand how their journeys in the climate and health sector looked like. DIGITAL HEALTHI found an employer, Comma Soft, where mine and their Why alligned. Within our team we use strategic and analytic thinking together with tools from Data Science and Machine Learning to help create a future, where patients obtain better and more personalized treatments. Use cases range from clinical trials, pharmaceutical formulations or creating a Machine Learning pipeline for singe cell sequencing procedures.SUSTAINABILITYWithin as well as outside of my work sustainability in all its facets plays a key role. How can we minimise ressources and energy usage? How do we envision our future society to look like and what are the ways to achieve this future? I have completed a training from MIT Sloan and Climate Interactive to become an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador. As such, I voluntarily give several workshop formats to help diverse stakeholder groups understanding and learning about the manifold aspects of the climate crisis.LET'S CONNECTInterested in a conversation?
