Ms Thulile Khanyile is a lecturer and PhD candidate at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) where she is investigating various sequential immunization strategies against HIV-1. She is the co-founder and co-Executive Director of Nka’Thuto EduPropeller NPO which equips grade 8 to 12 learners with innovation, research methodology and entrepreneurial skills with the aim of solving societal problems in township and rural communities by creating technology-based solutions.She is recipient of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), 2nd South African Youth Award (SAYA) in 2017 in the Academic Excellence category; the KZN Young achievers award in the academic development category (2017); and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Women in Science Award (WISA) in 2015. She has received research grants such as the NRF Thuthuka, WITS Faculty of Health Sciences seed funding and the Medical Research Council (MRC) - Soweto Matlosana Collaborating Centre for HIV/AIDS and TB (SoMCHAT). She is an Obama Africa Leader 2018, MaSisulu Woman of Fortitude 2018, Golden Key Honours Society Member, National Development Plan (NDP) Ambassador 2017/18, Altron Mentorship Business Mentee 2017/18 & Nedbank Igniter 2016. Thuli has recently been named in the top 100 Most Influential Young South Africans 2018 by Avance Media. She has participated in various panel discussions as both panellist and at times panel facilitator. She has given numerous invited talks and public lectures as a young thought leader in the innovation, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (iSTEM) fields looking specifically at the role of iSTEM in socio-economic growth and development. She has been featured in local and international print, online, radio and television platforms addressing issues related to her work. Nka’Thuto EduPropeller, under her joint directorship with her partner has reached in excess of 25 000 learners increasing their awareness of (iSTEM). It has taught research methodology and innovation skills to 3 000 learners. Additionally, the training of 51 teenagers the business canvas model and design thinking as a tool to create business cases from technology solutions created by the learners themselves. Nka’Thuto has developed 15 business cases which it aims to commercialize with the learners to develop township and rural economies in Africa. Nka’Thuto aims to go beyond South Africa with the aim of becoming a truly Pan-African organisation.

The organisation teaches learners at basic education level how to conduct research. Accordingly, learners are tasked to identify a problem in their communities and solve it using science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) principles. Learners showcase their solutions at the Nka’Thuto Innovation Expo after which projects with the most potential for commercialisation progress onto the TechnoPreneurship workshop. At this 4-day long workshop learners are put into teams to form businesses. Their task is to apply the business principles learnt at the workshop to their respective innovations to build a business case that they have to pitch to a panel of potential investors, business developers and incubators.As co-executive director I over-see the day to day running of the organisation. I am responsible for implementing the companies long-term and short terms plans in line with the organisation's objectives, vision and mission. I ensure that the operations and activities of the organisation produce desired outcomes and are in line with the overall mandate of the organisation. I am responsible for reviewing organisational reports both financial and non-financial reports as a means to create solutions or improvements on existing systems. My role also includes stakeholder relations and management and sourcing funds for the organisation. It includes content creation and content formulation for the activities of the organisation with the learners and facilitators. I ensure that Nka'Thuto adheres to legal guidelines and policies for the maintenance of the companies legality and business ethics. With a keen interest in creative activities such as writing and particularly marketing, I enjoy creating brand Nka'Thuto and contributing to its visibility.
