While searching for my next adventure, I wanted to complement my commercial background with couture experience. And what better place to do this than with one of the UK’s most well-known high-end couture brands. In my interim position, I work in a large team where collaboration and craft are crucial to success. Working on collections as well as for private clients, I produce intricate beadwork, woven knit and openwork that all come together in marvellous, one-of-a-kind dresses.

Fur is controversial, but it was fascinating to learn the ins and outs of the business. Working side-by-side with Rebecca Bradley herself, I was given an intense, yet thorough introduction to the materials and techniques, especially remodelling of vintage coats and jackets. My tasks included running the studio and shop, while also handling ad hoc tasks, such as speaking with our high-end clientele. As part of a small team, it was also my responsibility to take care of the interns, helping them with their tasks in the studio. Furthermore, my time at RBL gave me insight into the workings of a small fashion business and everything that comes with it.

DirecTEX gave me the opportunity to specialise in something I love; knit. Being part of the small team in Amsterdam allowed me to do many different tasks, such as shopping reports, trend forecasting and market research.Knitwear design was a big part of my internship. DirecTEX decided to produce all of my designs with the aim of selling them to their partners. Brands like PULL&BEAR purchased my designs and put them in retail – a very proud moment.

Copenhagen Area, Denmark

After moving to Copenhagen, I wanted to explore a different part of clothing design; theatre costumes. I found this opportunity at Eventyrteatret, where I helped set up the annual Christmas play, ‘A Christmas Carol’. Working with a bunch of volunteers, I designed and created all the menswear jackets, designed patterns and did fittings with the actors. It was a great opportunity for me to further improve my technical skills and explore another area of the business.

Shanghai City, China

Instead of finding an internship locally, I travelled to China to work with a small team, focusing on fashionable clothing for pregnant women. Being part of a small team gave me the opportunity to get my hand dirty with everything from technical drawings, market research, design, creation of marketing material and even a bit of modelling. It was a very giving experience in a culture vastly different from my own.
