Project ManagerNasa Ames Research Center Oct 2012 - PresentLead a multidisciplinary team in requirements identification through ground developments and space flight analog demonstrations to address technology gaps to reduce the risk of adverse health outcomes and decrements in performance due to inflight medical conditions. Project includes leadership for the development of a medical data architecture development, spaceflight analog testing and technical management of small business innovative research to support requirement/specification development. The medical data system seeks to address the need to comprehensively manage, discover and process medically-relevant information to support medical operations during exploration missions. In order to enable the seamless communication with all medical devices and other medically relevant data sources, a medical data architecture structure must accommodate data streams with varying formats, provide robust, integrated data storage and analytical layers, enable discovery and analytics to aid in computed medical decision support, and provide easy to use interfaces for the exploration crew members. The next stage in the development will focus on more autonomous clinical decision making necessary to address challenges in executing a self-contained medical system that enables health care without assistance from ground support. -
Project ManagerNasa Ames Research Center Jun 1991 - PresentCurrent Position: Project Manager, ARC Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC). Lead a multidisciplinary team in the identification through ground developments and ISS demonstrations to address technology gaps in efforts to reduce the risk of unacceptable outcomes due to limitations in in-flight medical capability for future Exploration Missions. -
Systems Engineer/Project LeadershipNasa Ames Research Center 2008 - 2013Lead Systems Engineer, ARC ExMC project, provided technical leadership for the EMSD ECG System. Future missions will require increased crew autonomy in the diagnosis of conditions, creation of treatment plans, and execution of procedures. The EMSD ECG will utilize the ISS as a testbed for several medical technologies, including ECG, and a suite of medical informatics tools for managing evidence and decision making integrated into a single system used by the on-orbit crew in an efficient and meaningful manner. The current system for donning the biomedical sensors is time consuming and inconvenient, requiring shaving, application of electrodes, and signal checks. A more efficient ECG system will save crew time and reduce the overhead of stowing additional supplies. Deputy Project Manager for the spaceflight certification of a new physiological imaging ultrasound device for use on the ISS: Project definition and scope, overseeing requirements development, team formulation, technical product development, technical presentations and coordinating a multidisciplinary team to ensure successful completion of milestone reviews and control gates. USND2 flew on-board the Atlantis in the last Space Shuttle flight, STS-135. -
Project LeadershipNasa Ames Research Center 2008 - 2013Other: Chairperson, Source Evaluation Board (SEB), managed a team of three technical and two contracting officer in requirements definition and acquisition planning for the release of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a $120M Contract; responsible for evaluating strengths and weaknesses of the submitted proposals to the Source Selection Authority; ISS Medical Program (ISSMP) International Partners (IP) Liaison Project led the development of and coordinated reviews with NASA and IP personnel resulting in agreements with IPs as they relate to the use of IP hardware and experiments. Lead for the NASA - Canadian Space Agency Vascular Experiment Letter and the NASA - European Space Agency Joint Utilization Plan for the Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System; Verification Lead, Coordinated and compiled closure rationale for qualification and acceptance testing and analysis, and provided the data acceptance package for the HM2 project in support of the ISSMP Office. The HM2 was on launched in October 2008 on ULF-2/STS-126.; Project Engineer, Led closure of qualification and acceptance testing and requirements verification for the ISS Holter Monitor 2 (HM2) for launch on alternative launch vehicles. -
Project LeadershipNasa Ames Research Center Oct 2006 - Jan 2008Detail to Constellation Program (CxP) Data Systems ProjectDeputy Lead, Information Technology (IT) Architecture Integration and Collaboration Task team, provided leadership, coordination, and strategic planning for the team; maintained a coordinated team during the transition of two Task Leads and Project Management change.Leader, Collaboration Team provided leadership for the Collaboration team in support for the CxP Management Systems Office (MSO) Integration Lead tracking technical issues across agency wide IT, Data Architecture, Data Management, and Configuration Management working groups.Acted as the interface between the customer and the team to ensure that customer requirements and expectations were addressed; facilitated communications across the four working groups, provided analysis of meetings and strategies for enhanced communications and collaboration and analysis of IT tools related issues for over 100 surveys from across all the CxP program and project offices. -
Facilities ManagerNasa Ames Research Center Aug 1999 - Oct 2006Facilities Utilization Office (FUO) Payload and Facilities Engineering BranchManager FUO, managed the operations team implementing 122 experiments on the 10 ground based acceleration research facilities including centrifuges and linear sleds and support laboratories. Average number of experiment runs per year 15, peak 21.Managed an annual budget $0.9 - 1.3M for operations, maintenance and upgrades/modifications and marketing, excluding civil servant staffing.Advocated successfully to ARC Management and Program Managers for facility upgrades and program expansions including the definition of instrumentation, software and hardware improvements, modifications, long range program objectives and requirements, and testing required for hypergravity and science research applications often requiring unique and innovative engineering solutions.Formulated cost estimates for up to 20 customers annually at pre-proposal and post award phase to identify project support requirements (facility, instrumentation, software, hardware, operational support), cost estimates and establish work plans and schedules.Provided leadership for a combined civil service and contractor staff of engineering, technician and science personnel to complete facility objectives.Task Manager for support contractor, managed multiple subtasks in addition to subtask supporting FUO and participated in performance evaluation board. -
EngineerNasa Ames Research Center Jun 1991 - 19995/1993 - 8/1999/ Facilities Utilization Office Payload and Facilities Engineering BranchElectronics Engineer, Developed experiment planning processes and procedures for documenting experiment planning and execution.Provided project leadership (test planning and management) for experiments conducted in the SLE acceleration research facilities including the coordination with intramural and extramural investigators to identify project objectives and translate them to facility and operational test requirements.Developed project requirements, plans, data acquisition methods (hardware and software), hardware fabrication and installation.Developed, integrated and programmed applications for data and medical monitoring systems. 6/1991 - 5/1993/ Electronic Systems BranchElectronics Engineer, Developed digital signal processing (DSP) based system for the processing of biomedical signals including the specification and purchase of DSP hardware/software and algorithm programming. -
