Learning Assistant for NE212: Intro to MATLAB Programming for Research in Psychological & Brain Sciences

The Mind and Brain Society at Boston University is an undergraduate student organization that is dedicated to providing multiple opportunities for members of the BU community and the greater Boston area to learn about the dynamic and fascinating field of Neuroscience. MBS offers students a variety of ways to get involved including scientific writing, student discussions, faculty speakers, and community outreach. The largest program we organize and host is BRAIN Day, our annual outreach event that is part of the Dana Foundation’s National Brain Awareness Week campaign.

Every year, the Mind and Brain Society organizes a free event called BRAIN Day. The event is staffed by undergraduates who spend months preparing individual stations covering a range of brain related topics with fun, interactive and mind-blowing experiments that explore the wonders of our nervous system. BRAIN Day is not exclusive to students who are interested in neuroscience. We understand neuroscience education is important to everyone, not just scientists, because we should know how to care for and understand the marvels of the brain, our most precious organ. The goal of this event is to provide a greater education and understanding about the mind and the brain to people of all ages and education backgrounds. In addition to the stations, there is also a panel of renowned speakers in the field offering a talk and discussion about their areas of interest and career paths in neuroscience.

Received Student Research Award funding from Boston University Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program to conduct independent research Summer 2017. My project involves building reinforcement learning models of persistence and flexibility in pursuing uncertain future rewards in Professor Joseph McGuire's Cognition and Decision Lab.

Contributed article 'Neuroeconomics: An Emerging Field of Study' to The Nerve 2017. The Nerve is a student journal published by the undergraduate program in neuroscience. The Nerve features undergraduate articles on neuroscience and related fields and aims to spread awareness and ignite interest in the field while giving fellow students the opportunity to refine their writing skills and integrate what they learn in class.

Because BRAIN Day requires months of planning, over 40 volunteers and a lot of materials, we need financial support to make it happen and better the event every year. In 2017, we started a crowdfunding campaign to fund for BRAIN Day 2018. We were able to raise $3439 which is 114% of our original goal over the course of one month from donors all over the world.

Contributed article 'Does Emotion Affect Our Ability To Make Rational Decisions?' to Behavioral Economics section and discussed the neural mechanisms behind irrational decision making.
