At The Center For Balance, Gainesville, Florida

At the Center for Balance, a wellness center, I offered a variety of massage and bodywork services. We were a group of independent practitioners - a variety of massage professionals practicing everything from chair massage to lymphatic drainage to structural integration as well as health care providers, an acupuncturist, a couple of psychologists and a nurse practitioner who specialized in women's health issues. It was a very supportive and joyful environment. As a massage therapist, I grew tremendously here not only in terms of learning new technical skills but also developing my interpersonal ones. I largely practiced therapeutic massage such as orthopedic massage, myofascial release, and neuromuscular therapy, because in Florida many insurance policies covered it. I also had many clients who appreciated a combination massage of relaxation with therapeutic work. The community of clients was beyond exceptional, and well educated in the benefits of massage therapy.Other modalities included aromatherapy, prenatal, CranioSacral Therapy, lomilomi, shiatsu, energy work, and raindrop technique.

At this health center dedicated to massage, I began to focus on more therapeutic modalities particularly trigger point therapy/neuromuscular therapy. I developed my assessment skills here.

At Well By Nature, Knoxville, Tennessee

Working at Well by Nature was my first foray into self-employment in the context of renting a space. My husband and I decided to move to Knoxville, Tennessee so he could commit to his higher educational pursuits. Because massage therapy employment opportunities were scarce in Knoxville at that time, my career took that detour. Becoming an independent contractor was the most appealing timely option available. I was so fortunate to end up in a state-of-the-art facility that was way ahead of its time. I practiced mostly aromatherapy massage there – so the focus was full-body massage using aromatics to enhance the clients' health and well-being. To create the appeal of a spa-like experience for our clientele, I designed packages combining the services offered by all the other practitioners. This was a tool that fostered community amongst us. Too shortly after arriving, my husband transferred his educational program to the University of Florida.

Missoula, Montana

Cedar Creek Salon & Day Spa was the first day spa in Missoula, Montana and it had opened about a year before I arrived. It was receiving accolades in the local media and it was a privilege to work there. We had an extensive spa menu and I assisted the owner in training the massage therapists. I was featured as the educator in the in-house training videos we were producing. I created new ways of effectively implementing the treatment protocols. I revamped the spa training manual, its forms, and created a reception manual, a cancellation policy, and packages. I wrote the brochure for our new sister day spa, Transformations. As the lead massage therapist, I acted as a liaison between management and the massage therapists. I served and consulted on the Policy and Procedure board and implemented new methods. I was the top seller of spa retail products in FY 2000, and I received a Certificate of Appreciation as Employee of the Year. I was trained, certified in and ultimately taught: exfoliations: dry brush, dry glove and salt; masque applications for body wraps: mud, seaweed, herbal and gel for detox, cellulite, and firming treatments; hydrotherapy: baths, waterfall, wet table, steam, sauna, hydroculator packs and thermal blankets as well as a scalp conditioning treatment.
