• First to observe the morphological evolution of free-growing hyperbranched dendrites in Al-Zn alloys using 4D synchrotron x-ray tomography at Argonne National Laboratory.• Experimentally validated a fundamental theorem of solidification: the square of a dendrite tip radius times the tip velocity (R2V) is constant during growth. • Improved image analysis capabilities by developing a convoluted neural network machine learning algorithm for semantic segmentation and high resolution feature identification. • Upgraded the group’s research facility by evaluating and repairing equipment, updating safety procedures, and training graduate students on best practice techniques.

• Studied fundamental properties of Nanostructured Ferritic Alloys (NFAs) to further the development of thermally stable and radiation tolerant materials for nuclear fusion and fission applications.• First to report self-selected crystallographic orientation relationships of metal-oxide interfaces fabricated by controlled deposition of Fe onto Y2Ti2O7 single crystals.• Improved an electron beam deposition system by adding and calibrating a rotating stage, designing custom holders, and optimizing operating parameters. • Developed an extraction and filtration method to isolate a specific nano-oxide population, then characterized the samples and NFAs using synchrotron light sources (Argonne NL, Brookhaven NL).

• Synthesized Mg2TiO4 pellets by ball milling, pressing, and sintering.• Irradiated samples using Danfysik High Energy Ion Implanter at the LANL IBML and characterized the microstructure using XRD, SEM, and EBSD.• Discovered that Mg2TiO4 is surprisingly radiation tolerant due to an induced phase transformation from inverse spinel to rocksalt.
