History means nothing unless we use it properly. That is the thought that drove me to develop a unique genre of non-fiction writing and intellectual exploration so original it has been embraced by a wide range of corporate groups to develop rich new seams of analysis and strategic thinking. And it is what drives me still to both improve the model and explore how better to share a clearer understanding of the world we face.Too often our leaders, whether political or commercial, local or international, familiar or distant, make incorrect decisions today based on misrepresenting yesterday. By stripping back to what I call `verifiable truth’ I have learned how to pan away the muddle and manipulation, propaganda and ephemera that so often clogs our analysis, drags down our debate and dooms our outcomes. What is left are the gleaming truths that help grasp not just where we are today but where we are heading tomorrow.Through a series of extraordinary explorations through Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe that demanded courage and stamina, I found a way to not just manage life-threatening risk, but to unravel some of the most challenging and intractable issues. My strategy, honed from two decades as a leading foreign correspondent for Britain’s leading quality newspaper, focuses on never accepting conventional assumptions but constantly striving to confirm, check and ascertain. Passionate about learning, I relish the challenge to explore the margin between place and time, history and reality, past and future.
