• Discovered novel disease causing isoforms of neutrophil elastase.• Described a previously unknown internal ribosomal entry site in ELANE.• Defined an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) within ELANE and demonstrated that adjacent mutations modulate IRES activity. • Concluded that some ELANE mutations appear to cause neutropenia via production of amino-terminally deleted NE isoforms, rather than by altering the coding sequence of the full-length protein. • Presented thesis at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology; recognized with ASH Abstract Achievement Award. • Published paper in top journal, Blood; considered a feature article and was accompanied by commentary from a leading neutrophil expert, Niels Borregaard.
