My passion has always been stories. My family will tell you it started when I was a baby, listening to songs with my grandmother, learning to speak by singing the words with her. Always very focused on the words and stories, the pain la pobre muñeca fea was facing: hidden in the corners, broken-armed, soot on her face, crying that she had nobody, chatting with mice who assured her they — the broom and the dustpan, the spiders and, of course, the mice — love her and they want her to be happy. I have carried that story with me, both the heartbreak and the hope, since I was a child, including the two decades I’ve been working in communications and journalism.I’ve had the privilege of hearing and telling stories of perseverance and resilience. A man who spent 16 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit, and after being exonerated went to law school, got his JD, and founded an organization to help fight for those who are wrongfully convicted. A student who made her American dream come true: interning at the White House, serving as executive assistant to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and now personal aide to Vice President Kamala Harris. A struggling mom who turned a mop into a $3 billion miracle. Over the last 20+ years, I've heard and told a lot of stories. I've written magazines, recruitment brochures, annual reports, ads, blogs, speeches, and a lot of web and newsletter content. I've learned how to design graphics, reports, infographics, and newsletters; host and produce events; fundraise; and pitch and place media. I've worked in higher education, nonprofit, magazine and book publishing, broadcast news, and public health. Since January 2020, I've led communications at one of the nation's leading health policy research centers. I've learned about health inequities, data disaggregation, and social drivers of health. I've fallen in love with data and research and am finally understanding the stories behind the numbers. Food insecurity, hate incidents, housing discrimination, gun violence, mental health, climate change, COVID, and the communities who are underserved and overlooked. I get to wake up every day and work with people who are making a difference. And I get to tell those stories and be part of that.
