PhD candidate studying the history of Early Modern England at the University of California, Riverside. My dissertation investigates Anglo-Spanish relations during the early republic period (1649-1654), from the beginnings of 'neutralidad' to the outbreak of Anglo-Spanish War in 1654/5. Anglo-Spanish relations during this period were volatile and unsure, encompassing three groups: Parliamentarians, exiled Royalists and Philip IV's Spain. The Royalist murder of Parliamentarian ambassador to Spain Anthony Ascham in 1650 centers my study, illustrating the tumultuous triangular diplomatic relations.My research broadly covers sixteenth and seventeenth century England in political, social and religious contexts. I especially enjoy researching the English popular print, and how it was weaponized as a form of political slander during the mid-seventeenth century.
