My last achievement in this role was the creation of a successful bid to deliver a billing system to France Telecom.Returning after maternity leave, I took up the role of Commercial Manager for EMEA, reporting to the Board. I was responsible for negotiating deals with major Telcos all over Europe for provision of telecoms billing software and services. I also drafted, reviewed and negotiated agreements with suppliers, third party software companies, sales agents and systems integrators. Working closely with the sales team, this role enabled me to transform their perception of contracts and the contracting process from a 'legal blocker' to a 'commercial facilitator'.

    I joined Anite in 1995 as a Project Manager, responsible for a team developing a telecoms billing system for CT2 networks. This was a challenging project, as it was already significantly late when I arrived and the client was deeply unhappy. Highlights in this role included turning around the client relationship, wrestling control of the project and delivery deadlines, and recovering from not one but two smash-and-grab attacks on our data centre that resulted in the project servers being stolen! Subsequently, I managed the Support Desk for Anite's Call Mediation software. The company was transitioning clients from the old VMS file-based system onto a new, Unix, relational database system which led to some interesting challenges (both technical and human). During this period I was also managing the product development team for the Unix Call Mediation product.After the birth of my first child, I returned to work in a business development role, using my project management skills and experience to create a new services line of business in connection with Anite's GSM protocol testing equipment. Although I was successful in this role (generating > £1m of sales in my first year!), I needed extra stimulation so started studying for a Masters Degree in Business Law. Having spent years negotiating and managing contracts without really knowing what I was doing (referred to as "making it up as you're going along" in legal circles), I thought it would be a good idea to get a formal qualification so that I could do a better job of contracting!

My work at Racal focussed on the development of military radio equipment, including RF circuit design, DSP programming and system design. I was part of the team developing Racal's inter- and intra-vehicle communication system (VICDS) as part of the company's unsuccessful Bowman bid. Despite Racal's lack of success in winning the UK Government contract, I'm proud to have been a key part of the creation of a voice-over-X.25 network, the predecessor to today's ubiquitous voice-over-IP technology.My last role at Racal was as the systems architect for a network management system to manage a mobile X25 data network, based on the PAKNET system.Regrettably, despite completing all of my training and most of the paperwork, I never got around to applying for Chartered Engineer status before I left Racal. But even though I'm no longer working as an engineer, the skills I learned in this role have been invaluable to me throughout my career and have helped hugely in the commercial work that I have done since.
