I was responsible for managing the data assets for a Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (RFMO) in the high seas of the South Pacific. This international position supported fisheries science, compliance, and management of the non-highly migratory species of the high seas. I worked to develop efficient ways to manage the high volume of data we received from Members, including fisher-reported, observer collected, port-side landings, and transshipment data, while ensuring the highest data quality standards. I had the privilege of working with international colleagues to support the Members' research and monitoring needs to inform and achieve sustainable management objectives.

I was part of a small group working on evaluating river restoration projects and researching limiting factors for salmonid production in the Upper Columbia River Basin. We were using a trophic web model to determine if changes in the physical habitat, addition of nutrients, and eventually removal of non-natives would produce shifts in the trophic system such that salmonid production would be positively affected.

As a Survey Technician I was part of a large effort to monitor habitat characteristics of tributaries to the Columbia River as they relate to salmonids. We implemented the CHaMP protocol to characterize the physical habitat and conduct topographic surveys using a Nikon Total Station. The topographic data were used to create digital elevation models, which over time will be used to detect changes in the topography. This work will also be used to prioritize restoration efforts and evaluate existing efforts.

My primary responsibilities included fisheries research projects, database development and management, monitoring of several fisheries, data reporting and automation, training and protocol development, contract review, and served as Co-Chair and member of the National Observer Program's Electronic Monitoring Committee.

As a Biologist working for Integrated Statistics I had the opportunity to work with several groups at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, on various projects. I began as a trainer for fisheries observers, worked with the Observer Program on data quality, technical reporting, and developing protocols. I also worked with the Ecosystems Survey Branch on the NOAA fishery-independent surveys performing oceanographic and biological sampling of fish, marine mammals, and turtles. Later on I joined the Cooperative Research Division and worked with commercial fishermen through a cooperative research effort to develop a self- reporting data collection program for quota monitoring and specific research initiatives. I spent considerable time in the field installing and troubleshooting electronics systems, training fishermen on how to use the systems, and collecting biological data on commercial fishing trips to evaluate the efficacy of the program itself through comparative analyses.

I worked as a fisheries observer on commercial fishing vessels to collect unbiased fishery-dependent data, making trips from 1-12 days in length. I observed various gear types including bottom, mid-water and pair trawls, scallop dredge, shrimp trawl, gillnets, and bottom longline. In addition to biological sampling of the catch I was responsible for sampling the bycatch including marine mammals and seabirds.
