Program description: WTA’s Emerging Leaders Program recruits a diverse cohort of individuals who want to form an inclusive community and build leadership skills to support future career interests in natural-resource stewardship and outdoor recreation. Participated in various trail work projects; including maintenance, new trail construction, installing drainage structures, and construction of supporting structures/walls.Scouted, researched, and developed Hiking Guide entries for under-reported urban hiking trails as a part of the organization's Trail Next Door Campaign.

Boys Outdoor Leadership Development (BOLD) & Girls Outdoor Leadership Development (GOLD) Program.Prepared for and led week-long wilderness backpacking trips of middle- and high-school students in the Washington state wilderness to build leadership, confidence, and backcountry skills. Summer, seasonal.Assisted with and/or instructed day activities (canoeing, snowshoeing, hiking) for adults, families, and school partnerships. Planned and completed an approximately 2,650-mile southbound hike from the Canadian border to the Mexican border along the Pacific Crest Trail.

Selected to be one of seven students in EHREP (Environmental Health Research Experience Program) REU out of a pool of over 100 applicants.Worked directly under the mentorship of Dr. Edmund Seto at the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.Developed the user interface for an Android application that tracked a user's energy expenditure and exposure to air pollution, and gave feedback to user. Became familiar with Android application development in Eclipse, Google Charts and Maps, basic SQL querying and use of SQLite databases, Google API and Play Developer Consoles, and designing user interfaces.Learned about environmental and occupational health issues (especially in WA state) in weekly seminars given by professionals working in the field.

Independent study with Department of Biology and Department of Neuroscience & Behavior.Studied the effects of tauopathy (neurodegenerative disease) on Drosophila melanogaster in a negative geotaxis assay. Participated in 25th annual Quinnipiac University Northeast Under/graduate Research Organization for Neuroscience (NEURON) conference. Studied the effects of an enriched environment on D. melanogaster affected by tauopathy by using a negative geotaxis assay.
