United Technologies UK Ltd or UTL Group as it is now known was started by my brother, Steve Arnold and myself early in 2000. Our aim was to offer a range of business equipment and the ability to reliably service that equipment to businesses in London and the South East of England.We aimed to grow by both acquisition and organically with a key focus on customer satisfaction and retention; vitally important if you are trying to cross-sell multiple products and services to customers.The business started by selling and servicing photocopiers or MFD's (Print/Copy/Scan) and made it's first acquisition in May 2000. Further acquisitions followed in the copier sector over the next few years. The company then branched out into the telecommunications sector supplying and servicing telephone systems as well as offering lines and calls. In 2007 we acquired a Structured Data Cabling company allowing us to offer the necessary network and comms. connectivity required for the MFD's and Telecom systems we were supplying.Over the following decade the company made some further smaller acquisitions but essentially consolidated it's position. In 2017 we acquired a security company allowing us to offer CCTV, Access Control/Door Entry Systems and Intruder Alarms, again with the back up of reliable servicing.In October 2020 we acquired another security company broadening our product and servicing portfolio further with the addition of Fire Alarms and Emergency Lighting. Development Through Challenge is a charity that promotes personal development through challenging physical activities; predominantly mountaineering and climbing. The organisation operates an indoor climbing centre known as the Mile End Climbing Wall in Bow, East London, which in addition to being open to the public seven days a week is available to schools and many other groups. The organisation also supply trained staff and equipment to facilitate climbing courses and other related activities offsite.As a keen climber who was using the climbing wall regularly I was approached by the small charity management committee to take on the role of CEO for the Charity and alongside be the Centre Manager for the Indoor Climbing Facility.My remit was to re-brand and develop the charity thus increasing its profile, opening it's services up to larger numbers of schools and groups. This was achieved partly through a fund-raising campaign but also by developing the climbing facility and increasing the numbers of public full paying recreational users.Over the course of my five years my key achievements were increasing opening hours and staffing levels, facilitating a huge increase in users; updating existing and building new climbing areas and modernising the Centre. I was responsible for introducing management structure, a staff training program and implementing a health and safety management system.
