With early exposure to programming and graphic design as I grew up in The Netherlands, I developed my technical and creative repertoire to include many design related skills, allowing me to design holistically and responsibly. My thesis defined a new direction for architectural design whereby intensive design and integration of bio-mimetic systems allow for living buildings that provide a surplus of environmental, and sustainable benefits. Being a dreamer and inventor at heart, my dedication and motivation is unending. Architecture provides me with the ability to not only express this innovation, but to make a lasting impact on the world as a whole. It is therefore, I believe, every Architect's responsibility to guide all buildings and designs down a sustainable path, and with Pro-Active Sustainability it is no longer prohibitively expensive. Instead, imagine a comparatively costly building that provides all electrical, water, waste treatment, food and bio-fuel requirements that its inhabitants may need, with surplus, and passively as an inherent function of the structure itself.The building serves and sustains it's inhabitants, and this is achievable with currently available technologies.The premise in developing this theory was born in an understanding that it would be almost impossible to truly transform the entirety of a poorly performing city, in terms of sustainable practices, by renovations and green buildings alone. Instead, a rhizomatic approach of buildings that are, by design, able to offset the buildings surrounding them.In my PhD I look to further develop the theory above to define the design principals and practices of this revolutionary new architecture, providing designers with practical and real-world steps to adopt.I ensure that every design decision in the projects I manage flows through my theoretical matrix, imbuing every project with an extra special sustainable feature.
