City Year is an educational based non-profit under AmeriCorps that works in economically disadvantaged communities as a coach and role model. As a service member, I worked with 5th and 2nd graders on academics and social emotional learning. My interaction with students was both in and out of the classroom. Spent a semester understanding the ethical development of conservation and field ecology. Explored the river ecosystems, environmental sustainability, and development through a variety of ethical lenses in Cambodia and Vietnam. Worked on a team to conduct field research on the transmission of traditional ecological knowledge and medicinal ethnobotany. Presented our findings to the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. Gained cross-cultural competency skills and thrived in a challenging environment. Courses included exploring the stakeholder relationships of states and NGO's, post-conflict politics, Khmer and Vietnamese language, environmental governance, sustainable tourism and natural resource managment.
