About Tim Booker
I work on the theoretical foundations of complex systems. I'm interested in the understanding and control of human systems & processes like governance, democracy, and inequity. I am always happy to chat with young physics/maths students looking to go down a similar path - just send me a message.

Phd Student
Researching the mathematical foundations of complex systems. Interested in the evolution of systems like social media, governance, and democracy.
Visiting Researcher
At the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, Kyoto University, within the Future Wisdom Institute. I will be researching the entropy of complex systems applicable for social systems. This is part of a broader research narrative understanding the ways that social media, and other global communication technologies, have changed the way information flows around the world.
New Colombo Plan Scholar (Japan)
I travelled to Japan to study the entropy of complex social systems with the GSAIS at Kyoto University. The travel was supported by The New Colombo Plan scholarship. This is a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade scholarship that support travel to Indo-Pacific countries with the aim of enhancing Australian-Indo Pacific relations and mobility.
Physicist
Researching emerging temporal network methods.Previously, I worked within Maritime Division researching structural acoustics and Aerospace Division on fibre optic sensor technology. My position attained through the DST STEM Cadetship program.
Club President
We, the leadership committee, led the Swinburne Physics Club through 2021. This was the "coming out of lockdown" year, so in-person university activity was non-existent. Our leadership focused our attention on fostering a strong online community. Primarily, we nurtured a new space to keep undergraduate camaraderie alive throughout 2021. Secondarily, we organised online social events like games nights, trivia competitions, and socials. We were particularly proud to organise and host the honours mock presentations. This was a chance for honours students to present their theses in a relaxed, stress-free and supervisor-free environment prior to the graded thesis defence.
Honours Student
I am researching self-avoiding walks with a focus on tractable models. Tractable models are simplified lattice paths that reside on the boundary of analytic solvability and unsolvability. In other words, these are maths problems that are very hard, but not impossible. A focus of our research was the timid walks. We employed the tools of analytic combinatorics and statistical mechanics to understand the fundamental question of lattice path models: how many n-step walks are there? To answer this question is to answer nearly everything one needs to know about a walk model. So, to answer this question is the "solve the model".These models are interesting to us because of "universality" - a property of self-avoiding lattice walks that denotes the independence of the macroscopic and microscopic properties. For example, a triangular lattice path and a square lattice path will "look" exactly the same from far away. Amazingly, this property allows the structure of real-life polymers to be captured *exactly* by self-avoiding walks. So, we interrogate the combinatorial and statistical properties of self-avoiding walks to gain insight into the dynamics of polymeric structure. If you'd like to learn more about this, feel more than welcome to say hi!
Teacher
I taught primary school aged children the basics of programming and game design during several of Code Camp's 4-day courses. I guided kids through a fun learning experience, saw local parents filled with pride as they played the games their kid's created, and learned a lot about how to teach and manage young, energetic kids a challenging curriculum.
