I am the Lead for Digital Innovation at the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility at the APPF ANU node in Canberra, Australia where we develop cutting edge open-source tools for high throughput phenotyping (HTP), data visualisation and spatial computing (VR/AR).I also lead the Australian Scalable Drone Cloud, establishing a national platform to scale up Australia’s capability to deliver improved outcomes in research, conservation and strategic minerals. ASDC integrates open-source tools for drone data processing (OpenDroneMap), analytics/pipeline development (Jupyter), 3D time-series visualisation (Cesium, Terria) & FAIR data (Research Data Australia).At ANU, I’ve led a wide range of projects enabling world-leading research and expanding ANU’s phenotyping capacity: TraitCapture (Linkage), an open-source suite of low-cost HTP tools; developing international standards for phenocam data; launching the Australian Phenocam Network with TERN, and developing data management systems for the Australian Mountain Research Facility.I was lead CI on a 3-year research collaboration with the pharmaceutical company Medicago, pioneering the use of 3D/hyperspectral data and ML to non-invasively monitor protein production for plant-based vaccines. In 2015 I created one of the first digital twins of an ecosystem, a VR model of the National Arboretum, Canberra with tree data from drone flights & mesh sensor data mapped onto the landscape.As director at APPF-ANU I oversaw 9 employees & multiple contractors working on software, hardware, data management, and web development using Python, MongoDB, Go, OpenCV, R & cloud/supercompute resources.My PhD linked complexity theory, agent-based modelling, software development and field work to create the best existing model of self-organised swarming behaviour in E. burchellii army ants. I filmed ant swarms in the field in Costa Rica, wrote software to manually track 30,000 ants from video to derive and parameterize an equation describing behaviour of individual ants. From these data I derived an equation for individual ant behaviour in swarms. I then built an agent-based model that successfully reproduced in silico, individual behaviours and emergent swarming patterns observed in the field swarm data.In 2006 I co-founded TimeScience, a technology consulting company developing environmental monitoring tools and TimeCam.TV (online timelapse for construction & tourism). I led a range of projects including Gigavision, a multi-billion pixel solar powered camera for recording hourly phenology in thousands of plants in the field.

CurrentCo-owner, lead scientist and project manager for TimeScience LLCTimeScience was founded in in 2006 by myself and Christopher Zimmermann. At TimeScience, I developed camera systems and created analytical tools for plant monitoring, near remote sensing (phenocams) and long term ecosystem monitoring. The core focus of all my work was to improve the technological tools available for conservation and ecological research and to promote improved data sharing in the sciences. Recent Projects2008-2012: Designing and installation of tower-based visible and infrared camera networks to ground-truth regional scale satellite data. This work was a collaboration with Dr's Pamela Nagler (USGS) and Kevin Hultine (Desert Botanical Garden, AZ). These data sets allow us to better model invasive species impacts and bio-remediation efforts in the desert Southwest (Nagler, 2012). 2009 - 2102: In a collaboration with Dr. Justin Borevitz (ANU & U Chicago) I developed a multi-billion pixel resolution time-lapse camera called Gigavision (Brown, 2012). This camera enables collection of plant phenology data from every plant in a 100 hectare area at an average resolution of 1px/m2. My work with Dr. Borevitz at ANU led me to an interest in applying my diverse skills in complex data analysis, computational modeling and camera system development to tackle the pressing question of identifying the genetic loci that control growth in plants. I am also continuing work developing the Gigavision system for ecosystem monitoring. The combination of these two novel techniques – camera-based high throughput phenology in growth chambers and automated collection of high-resolution ecological data at field sites – can provide key advances in the fields of crop science, genomics and landscape ecology.

My PhD linked complexity theory and ecology and evolution to model how Eciton burchellii army ants organize their complex swarms. I did field work and computational modeling to create the most accurate existing individual based model of army ant swarming behavior. Data collection involved filming ants in the field in Costa Rica, then writing software to enable me to manually track the positions of over 30,000 ants in swarming videos. These data were used to develop an algorithm describing how ants make behavior decisions in the swarm. The algorithm was used to create an individual based model that effectively reproduced army ant swarming behaviors.
