A lot of people use this space to talk about their qualifications and professional experience. I thought it might make a nice change to explain why I do this and how I got here. Apparently my first words were 'Chipmunk Plane' and from that moment I was doomed..... worse still, I was right. If only I had said Chipmunk aircraft, I hate the word plane, except in carpentry or physics. Growing up on RAF stations as the family moved with my father's career meant Biggles books, Airfix kits and radio control aircraft all followed as I grew up, all against my parent's advice, my father often telling me that the only way to make a small fortune in aviation was to start off with a very, very big one. Truth truly is wasted on the young isn't it? Learning to fly four years before I could drive was typical, but hitchhiking to airfields never seemed odd to me. Living in Berlin with the Wall up was an eye opener on so many fronts, not least in the varied society found in half a city. A fascinating aviation career followed, while magazine articles, books and tv scripts eventually led to my own companies, publishing, then setting up and running websites for some of the great aviation institutions, the RAF, the Army Air Corps, Airbus, for nearly eleven years. Commentating air shows knitted well at this time, allowing me to cover teams such as the Blue Eagles live from their displays, by 64k mobile phone link no less, the first time this had been done. Strangely, or actually not, considering my bizarre path to date, my current job started with a conversation at the bar with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Cheers Smithy! To call it a job is to do it an injustice, this is a vocation for me, where I belong. To have a free reign to plunge into history with the support of one of Britain's finest publishing houses is a dream. To have it well received and supported by the industry I am so passionate about is the icing on the cake. The adventure continues, it just keeps getting better.
