My role as a section engineer was to run the pier strengthening, both temporary and permanent. My role was to:· Interpret drawings and specification documents and in turn provide guidance to the supervisors about construction method and construction sequence.· Ensure tools and materials were procured ahead of time, so as to not hinder programme. · Ensure all relevant work permits were obtained prior to work starting· Quality Assurance, including onsite inspections with the client, compiling of QA documentation and updating ITP’s and Checklists as necessary.· Ongoing maintenance method statements.· Subcontractor management, for specialised tasks requiring skills outside of the general labour crew.· Creating and updating a 3 week look ahead on a weekly basis, showing labour and material resources required for each task.· Progress reporting back to the project manager.I managed up to 3 labour gangs, ensuring that the crew and the supervisors all had full understanding of the task at hand and were undertaking the work in a safe manner.When producing the 3 week look ahead, it was easy to see the required resources vary as tasks were complete and new tasks came online. To ensure full utilisation of labour it was essential to communicate with other section engineers and sequence work such that all crews were being used at all times. For this project I was the first engineer on site, I was tasked with the setup of the quality assurance system. This involved outlining work lots, selecting an appropriate tracking method and submitting QA templates for client review. I also had brief input into the setup of the health and safety systems. Once this initial set up phase was over I began my role as a project engineer. I had 3 subcontractors to manage during this project, the drainage crew and 2 soil testing laboratories. In order to deliver the project on time, on budget and to specification I had to ensure that all drainage works and soil testing was completed ahead of primary bulk earth works as to not hinder project progress. This required:• Timely procurement of the correct plant, labour and materials, • Developing an efficient and practical work sequence, often based on plant, labour and manning availability,• Raising and addressing onsite technical queries before they hindered project progress,• Application and filling of the required permits and safety documents.As part of this role I also had to report back to senior engineers and the project managers with:• Progress updates vs the baseline programme • Monthly updates of the forecasted cost at completion• Labour and plant hours for project wide reporting• Potential variation work that the subcontractors could undertake to accelerate progress or to reduce overall project costs.
