Timothy J. Cotter is a managing director of Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc., a human resources management consulting firm. Previously, he was a senior vice president with The Sullivan Group, Inc., and a managing director with William M. Mercer, Inc. In his 40 years of consulting, he has worked with a wide variety of employers in designing and evaluating reward systems for all types of employees. Mr. Cotter’s experience in the health care field is extensive. He has worked with more than 400 health care organizations on board, executive, physician and staff compensation matters. Client organizations include hospitals, health systems, medical schools, academic medical centers, physician groups and health plans.Mr. Cotter appears regularly before a wide variety of health care groups at the national, state and local levels to discuss pay-related issues. He also has served as a faculty member for the management education programs of leading universities and professional organizations.Mr. Cotter has a Master of Labor and Industrial Relations degree from Michigan State University. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.He is the co-author of articles that have appeared in a number of professional journals, including Trustee, Exempt Organization Tax Review, Healthcare Financial Management, Board Source, HR Pulse, Personnel, Personnel Journal and Health Lawyers Weekly. He is a co-author of the Governance Institute’s White Paper entitled Updated Guidance for the Board’s Executive Compensation Committee. He is also a co-author of the Governance Institute’s White Paper entitled The Board’s Role in Approving Executive Compensation, and he is quoted extensively in the ACHE’s Contracts for Healthcare Executives.He is a member of several professional organizations, including WorldatWork, which designated him a Certified Compensation Professional.
