Profile bio

About Tim Crain

My experience base is a mix of applied dynamical system research, systems engineering, teaching, and design/development of real-time GNC systems. My research and academic training was in mathematical/numerical techniques for estimation and control of dynamical systems. Specifically, the navigation and guidance of space and entry vehicles....but the principles are broadly applicable to any system that can be observed via measurement and defined via differential equations. I am equally comfortable communicating and working with a range of disciplines and levels of expertise ranging from technical expert, elementary school student, to project manager. My personal goals are to enable future space exploration by human beings and to educate future generations in science, technology, engineering, and math....whether or not their eventual application is space. These goals are ongoing.I also play bass guitar and aspire to be in a rocking but little known trio of rock/funk/punk/blues original music. This goal is currently satisfied but still pursued passionately.Specialties: System estimation and control. Computer programming. Numerical optimization. Synthesis of complex systems into manageable work elements. Interpersonal communications. Bass guitar. Teaching. Mentoring students.

Listed skills include Spacecraft, Systems Engineering, Aerospace, Space Systems, and 45 others.

Jun 2013 - Jan 2024

Gn&C Lead - Morpheus Vertical Test Bed

Washington, DC, US

We worked this as Project M for about 9 months with the intent of building an experimental lander to go to the Moon in 1000 days. Sea changes at NASA in early 2010 made the grander objective unsustainable, but we did keep to our build-test-learn-repeat goals in support of ALHAT. We prototyped a GNC system in partnership with Draper labs as a payload on the.

Nov 2009 - Jun 2013

Strategist (Unofficial)

Washington, DC, US

In addition to my steady state roles, I've participated in developing strategies for technology programs such as the Flagship Technology Program, the Automated Rendezvous and Docking Community of Practice Whitepaper, and numerous cooperative proposals with NASA as a partner...but not always the leader. The latter footnote provides for some interesting.

Jan 2005 - Jun 2013

Aerospace Engineer

Washington, DC, US

What an amazing experience working in the Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division of the JSC Engineering Directorate. I had the opportunity to develop real-time navigation for Mars EDL, design trajectory optimization tools, develop Autonomous Rendezvous, Proximity-Operations, and Docking (RPOD) technologies, and finally work on the singular.

Sep 2000 - Jun 2013

Project Orion - Deputy Flight Mechanics System Manager

Washington, DC, US

During a brief return to Orion, I helped to accelerate the implementation of the navigation system including a significant code and complexity reduction working with a multi-organization, distributed team. Morpheus flight testing in the spring required my full time and I had to relinquish my Orion responsibilities.

Sep 2010 - Mar 2011

Orion Orbit Gn&C System Manager

Washington, DC, US

This was the dream job while Constellation was in full stride. I was responsible for overall coordination of the Orion Lunar and LEO-ISS trajectory design and GNC system development. Including interplanetary (cislunar) flight and automated rendezvous and docking (AR&D) in LEO and LLO. I had an excellent team that included contractors from Lockheed Martin.

2005 - 2009 ~4 yrs

Adjunct Faculty

Houston, TX, US

I taught upper division/graduate courses on fundamentals of astrodynamics, perturbation methods, and numerical methods at UHCL. These courses are great fun to teach as I learn something new every time too! This was booming when Constellation was in full stride. However, the interest and enrollment in this area has dropped off considerably with the closure.

Sep 2003 - Sep 2008

Mars Science Laboratory Navigation Developer

Nasa Johnson Space Center

Developed the preliminary design for MSL entry navigation in collaboration with JPL and UT-Austin. The concepts in this development have been re-used in a number of navigation efforts since including HRVDM, Orion, and Morpheus.

Sep 2000 - Sep 2004

Assistant Instructor

University Of Texas At Austin

I taught the flight dynamics and orbital dynamics computer laboratory classes in the Aerospace Engineering department. Flight dynamics involved time mentoring student pairs in the Link GAT-1 flight 2 axis flight simulator. The orbital dynamics lab included time teaching algorithm implementation for computer simulation of orbits.
