2015 starts off with another DMD project but this time in a totally different segment: automotive. I did the electronics for a laser driven adaptive headlight. Interesting project from concept to final design with lots of experiments and travel, working closely with my optical colleagues in Jena, Germany. Challenging due to small formfactor, high power, automotive, high speed signaling...2018, a new year, a new automotive project: an electronics control unit for a hydraulic pump. High power, functional safety, small formfactor... again interesting and challenging. The PCB concept we used for this project was a perfect fit for an e-bike project following next, so we got a jump start. Show less

When the development of the second mobile phone project was successfully finished I moved on to the next challenge.: together with a system architect, I developed the electronics for a DLP system featuring a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device). The restrictions in size and shape in combination with the high complexity of routing all impedance controlled lines on numerous layers were a big challenge for me (especially to keep our layouters motivated through out this time-critical -as always- layout phase). In the end it was a success and we were asked to build a successor with 3D functionality. Those electronics were integrated in rear-projection cubes, being the building blocks for control-room HD video walls.A nice little project (which was perfectly in line with my interest: building automation and surveillance) came along: an IP camera. Being able to create this project from scratch (electronics, mechanics and software) was a nice change for our team, because most of the time we start from an existing product/concept.Next we started the industrialization for a Head Mounted Display prototype. Eventually the scope was a simple industrialization but in the end we had to do quite some redesign due to EOL components and other hurdles in the original design. However this was one of my favorite projects given the challenging design, the final result and immense dedication of the customer. This was really inspiring.A Home Area Manager is used to monitor your power consumption and remotely (via internet) control devices in your home. Kito (the dog from the Electrabel promo) did some advertising for it. We did a cost down and industrialization of this gateway.Final project of this period was a mobile tracker (children/elderly) with GPS and GSM. Design from scratch for electronics and mechanics. After taking part in some smaller project (LCD projectors, Home assistant (robot)…) the big challenge of my new career at Jabil would become the development of a cell phone for with one of the largest mobile phone companies (at that time). With this project, travel went from 5% to 80% doing co-development with Ulm (Germany), production in Tiszaujvaros (Hungary) and my office in Hasselt (Belgium). Finishing off my studies at GroupT I did my thesis at Philips Leuven (ITCL) in Haasrode, defining and programming (VHDL) a multi laser CD/DVD reading/writing system.Having the choice of starting at Philips Leuven or Philips Hasselt, I chose for the latter considering the home-work distance (only 5k) and the amount of career opportunities in a +2500 people development/production site.I started in the audio group (CDRW), supporting the HW crew with the evaluation of the Mozart platform, a… Show more Finishing off my studies at GroupT I did my thesis at Philips Leuven (ITCL) in Haasrode, defining and programming (VHDL) a multi laser CD/DVD reading/writing system.Having the choice of starting at Philips Leuven or Philips Hasselt, I chose for the latter considering the home-work distance (only 5k) and the amount of career opportunities in a +2500 people development/production site.I started in the audio group (CDRW), supporting the HW crew with the evaluation of the Mozart platform, a CDRW module to be fit into a midi-stereo set. Due to the increased pressure to finalize the SW I became the interface between them and the HW. The project was entering sustaining phase a bit later. After this rather successful module it went downhill with the Audio division at Hasselt. I participated in numerous derivatives / follow-up projects, doing schematics design, layout, concept studies… but all effort was in vain since all projects stopped a while after their launch.I switched over to the Video division. They were finishing off the DVD+RW module / players and were looking for someone being the interface between Development and Validation. Never shy for accepting new challenges I soon set up a configuration management tool, logged all transactions between Dev-Val and made sure all issues seen were reported to the responsible designer. Before the transfer of the project to China I did the design work for OEM DVDRW players, designing new front cover electronics. At this time Philips sold a lot of factories and some development sites to Jabil. Hasselt was one of them. We continued our product development activities but now under the American wings of Jabil. Show less
