I have worked in the field of biodiversity conservation and natural resource management in BC for over 25 years. Ecosystem restoration has been one important touchstone of this work. In particular, the restoration of Garry oak ecosystems, coastal sand dunes, estuaries, wetlands and forests have been my focus, along with the recovery and reintroduction of their associated species at risk. Prescribed burning, invasive species management and habitat creation have all been elements as well. Protected areas establishment and management has been another important aspect of my work, particularly in the last 10 years. This includes the full cycle from strategic, science-based conservation planning at the landscape scale to site assessments, negotiating purchase and sale agreements or other conservation agreements, fundraising, ecological inventory and description (TEM-based), management planning, implementation and monitoring. Sustainable forest management, ranching and recreation feature management have been included in that. I have a deep understanding of and passion for First Nations cultures and communities, so this has always been a strong element of my work as well. Environmental education and outreach through various media including TV, radio, social media, site-based tours, public speaking, photography and journalism is another area of experience. Building relationships and working in partnership with others is critical to success. I have been a founding member of both the Garry Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team and the Coastal Douglas-fir Conservation Partnership. Business planning, budgeting and creating programs is another area of particular experience and interest.

I was also responsible for managing all of NCC's properties in the area, ensuring they were adequately resourced, creating property management plans and restoration plans, as well as implementing those plans with subordinate staff, volunteers and contractors. I was also the public face of the organization in the area, including radio and TV interviews, through public speaking events, publishing written pieces and teaching classes at various academic institutions as a guest lecturer. Developing annual business plans and budgets as well as reporting out on program implementation was central. Show less -

Developing the methods for monitoring the effectiveness of NCC's conservation work is one such example. This position also involved establishing conservation ranch management plans, sustainable forest harvesting plans, working with carbon credit programs, prescribed fire management, and my forms of ecosystem restoration. As a active participant in our fundraising team, I directly raised or assisted with raising millions of dollars for these conservation projects. Show less -
