When I returned to New Zealand in 2016, I joined Archimedia Group as an Associate Director and then moved into the role of Practice Director. One of the significant projects I was involved with included the base build for the Southern Cross Northern Clinic Extension, a specialist private healthcare facility on the North Shore. At the same time, I led the project team for a mixed-use development at 54 Parkway Drive in Albany. This involved working with the Council on rezoning the site, which will have five buildings housing mixed-use residential apartments, retail and office on a podium.

I was engaged by Flanagan Lawrence in the UK for nearly four years. This offered me the opportunity to work on some interesting projects, as well as further develop my skills in feasibility studies, stakeholder management, project management and advanced use of design technology. One key project was 101 Embankment, Greengate, in the historic centre of Salford and overlooking Manchester Cathedral. This build reused a historical embankment railway podium as the base for a commercial office development in the form of a nine-storey and ten-storey tower. I was also involved in the project team for the redevelopment of a historic building in Shepherd’s Bush, London. This involved converting the 1910 palladium into an eight-storey building with 74 serviced apartments, while retaining the historic facade. Due to its sensitive nature and impact on the local residences, stakeholder management and involving the community in the design was a key part of the process.

Gaining a graduate position with Beca was a great experience. I worked there for three years on projects all over the country, mainly in the industrial sector and on office fit-outs. Key projects included the Corbel Construction Office and Beca Office fit-outs, both located in Christchurch. I honed my concept design and design management skills, project and services co-ordination, management of large-scale jobs. My role saw me work closely with clients and contractors.

Working at Naylor Love as National BIM Manager and Design Manager I refined my skills in Archicad, Revit, Deep Exploration and Right Hemisphere. This role was also my first opportunity to gain some hands-on experience of on-site project management.

My role with Predefine Limited was a great complement to my last year of study, and the beginning of my career in the industry. The work on BIM modelling, and drawing for construction and documentation drawings, gave me a great foundation for a career in architecture.
