About Tim Hansen

Hey! I'm Tim. I'm a creator, educator, and performer with a passion for inspiring creativity and forming community. My twin creative outlets have been theatre and music ever since I was a kid, and I feel so lucky to be able to work professionally in these spheres. I have a special passion and talent for helping others discover their creativity. I believe that creative expression is innate to all of us. It's what makes us human, and a big part of my life's work is providing young people and adults with safe spaces where they can explore their creativity, learn more about what artists do, and perhaps even inspire them to pursue their own creative interests. My mantra is "If you can see it, you can be it", so I try to live my life as the kind of person that would have inspired me when I was 16 years old. Professionally, I create and present content and educational material for organisations with an artistic or creative slant. I've worked with a lot of performing arts and educational institutions around Australia, from small community organisations through to major performing arts orgs.I'm also a classically-trained composer, and I've write in mediums from classical music to cabaret, music theatre to corporate branding. My deep love of music creation is born from its ability to express emotion and mood in a way that no other artform can. It's a kind of magic. And the whole reason I got into this crazy, amazing business in the first place is because I love performing. These days I get my performance kicks through presenting educational concerts to young people, and presenting cabaret to adults as my alter ego "Tim Handsome". I'm confident and charismatic in front of an audience (and in real life), and when I'm on stage it's a two-way conversation between me and the audience. Thanks for reading my biographical novel. If you like the cut of my jib, shoot me a message and connect! I love meeting new people and learning about all the amazing things human beings can do.

Musica Viva Australia Feb 2020 - Present
    Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
I'm one of two artists collaborating with Musica Viva on the Musician in the Classroom. This pilot program is a first for NSW and new to Australia, where a professional musician is placed in a culturally and linguistically diverse primary school in an area of socio-economic disadvantage. My role is to teach the teachers how to teach music, and I've accomplished my job when I've made myself redundant. I'm currently teaching in two primary schools, one in Liverpool and another in Woollomooloo, Sydney. I teach the entire primary school, from kindergarten to year 6, including support classes. Each school is as culturally different from the other as can be, but in both schools my role is the same: - I teach the classroom teachers by demonstration, working directly with the students, using resources created by Musica Viva, as well as my own resources created specifically for the school - I run professional development workshops for the teachers outside of school time, covering music theory, instrumental study, and creative music practice - I help direct school concerts, assisting teachers to select music for their classes to perform, rehearse, and present, twice a year - I collaborate with the school executive on the creative curriculum for the school, in line with the NESA curriculum

    Workshop Facilitator And Composer
Milk Crate Theatre Jan 2019 - Dec 2019
    Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Milk Crate Theatre is a theatre company based in Sydney that is made up of people who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness. The company's mission is to re-enfranchise people who are pushed to the fringes of society by telling their stories and building community. In 2019 Milk Crate Theatre devised "Natural Order", an immersive, subversive show about the challenges people who experienced homelessness faced when trying to navigate Australia's notoriously punitive social support service, Centrelink. For six months I led a creative songwriting workshop with company members to create a 10 minute cabaret medley that the cast would perform as part of the "Natural Order" show. I then created the music for the show, and returned to teach and rehearse it with the cast. - I led workshops outlining song structure, how lyric writing works, and how to engage and trust your own creativity - I led workshops where participants brainstormed ideas, and then started structuring songs together - I collaborated with participants to create music and melody for their song ideas - I created and produced the backing track for the music - I taught and rehearsed the medley with the participantsIt was a deeply fulfilling project to work on.
