Nowadays I spend most of my 'working' time on personal projects, using Look Multimedia as a vehicle. Currently top of the list is promoting recognition of a book which may have been used by James Joyce (see Twitter @SandycoveAtlas for more). In 2018-19 it was publishing the first proper translation into English of a great Russian novel - 'Death of the Vazir-Mukhtar'. More to come in that area in 2021 I hope. Soon I hope to be back with data communications, bringing together the work I did in the 1960s and '70s on the early days of the internet. I would like to get it into the historical record before it's lost or forgotten.I'm still a director of Point Topic, which I started in 1998, and enjoy monitoring its current success. We set up the company to provide definitive information about broadband markets and it is now well established with products covering global markets at a general level and the UK in depth. The opportunities for growth are great. In 1992 I founded Look Multimedia, which made videos about IT management issues, and ran it until 1997. It still exists as a company and a convenient platform for projects. Before then my main career was with Ovum, which became one of the biggest telecoms and IT services analyst companies in Europe. I originally founded the company in 1971 and between then and 1975 Ovum published some pioneering reports on such topics as packet switching. But the finances were a bit overstretched so I joined Logica, then a young systems house with about 300 staff. After working with Logica for seven years I left to revive Ovum. Soon, in 1985, four excellent colleagues from Logica joined me and we turned Ovum into a major analyst company. Ovum went public in 2006, soon to be swallowed up by Datamonitor, which was then acquired by Informa in 2007. Going back still further, I started my career as a science journalist, working for the Daily Telegraph and two weekly magazines before joining the Sunday Times as Technology Correspondent.Specialties: Analysis, modelling and forecasting of markets based on telecoms technologies. Aiming to turn from predicting the future to recording the past.

Produced reports on HDTV, Expert Systems and Natural Language Processing.1985-91 Four brilliant colleagues Ron Sasson, David Lewin, Julian Hewett and Richard Key left Logica to join me and Ovum took off to become one of the biggest European technology analysts and consultancies. I left to work on Look Multimedia in 1991 but remained a director of Ovum until 1996. -

Managing DirectorOvum Feb 1971 - Oct 1975London, United KingdomThis was the first version of Ovum. We developed the technology research report business model, both researching ourselves and publishing reports from other sources. Early colleagues were Deborah Waroff and Evelynne Rubin, then Sandy Macdonald, Andy Farquharson and others. We reported on Videocassettes, Fax machines and Electronic cash registers, among other things. A best seller from the Electrical Research Association was on the first generation of microprocessors. My report on packet switching (1975) also sold well and did a lot to shape my subsequent career at Logica, Ovum and Point Topic.I'm sometimes asked "Why Ovum?" Well, In 1970 I was looking for:Something short - four letter word - like Time or LifeTwo syllables - more distinctive, easier to hear - like KodakWith international meaning, in many languagesAbout the communication of information - as the egg carries DNA.Some people thought it was a bit weird at the time and occasionally since but I'm delighted to see how well it has endured.Another key event was getting ovum.com - much later - that must be worth $1m or so by itself now. Nothing to do with me - Oliver Johnson and Julian Hewett saw to it.
