Founder and Chief Scientist at Origen, a UK-based cleantech company specialising in providing innovative solutions for carbon capture from the atmosphere. Also leads a group at the University of Oxford assessing proposed techniques for removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and the governance of such research. A co-author of the Oxford Principles – a set of draft principles for the conduct of geoengineering research, which have been adopted as policy by the UK government.

Founder And Chief ScientistOrigen Power Jun 2013 - PresentLondon, England, GbOrigen is developing technologies to profitably capture and remove billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere -
Co-Founder, Trustee And Chair Of Advisory BoardCarbon Gap Mar 2023 - PresentBrussels, Brussels Region, BeCarbon Gap's mission is to help Europe become a world leader in deploying carbon removal. It seeks to help and guide European decision makers about the role carbon removal has in achieving Net Zero. Philanthropically-funded, Carbon Gap is a non-profit organisation which provides independent, science-based expert advice on the appropriate regulation of proposed techniques to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. We bridge the knowledge, policy and ambition gaps so that carbon removal becomes a critical pillar of European climate action. -
Co-Founder And DirectorDrygro Dec 2014 - PresentLondon, England, GbDryGro is developing a technology to grow biomass in arid environments - using 99% less water than conventional agriculture. We are focusing on producing Lemna - a plant rich in protein that can substitute for soy in animal feed.www.drygro.com -
Oxford Martin FellowOxford Geoengineering Programme Aug 2010 - PresentIn August 2010, the Oxford Geoengineering Institute was 'spun-in' to the University of Oxford to become the Oxford Geoengineering Programme (OGP) - part of the Oxford Martin School. The objective of the OGP is to assess the potential of all proposed geoengineering techniques to counteract climate change, to determine, which, if any, of them could be deployed without creating countervailing side-effects. See www.geoengineering.ox.ac.uk for more details. The OGP seeks to assess the technical, social, political, ethical, environmental and economic issues associated with all proposed geoengineering techniques in a responsible way.I co-authored a submission entitled "Memorandum on draft principles for the conduct of geoengineering research" to the House of Common Science and Technology Committee in response to their call for evidence relating to their enquiry on "The Regulation of Geoengineering". The Oxford Principles, as they later became known, were endorsed by the Committee and by the Government in their response to the Committee's report. See http://www.geoengineering.ox.ac.uk/oxford-principles/history/ for more details.I was awarded at £50k Greenius Award in 2012 for my work on the DryGro concept whch enables the production of biomass in arid environments using 99% less water than conventional agriculture. I also filed a patent application in 2013 on a process that simultaneously purifies CO2 from a flue gas and desalinates water. See http://www.google.com/patents/WO2014125269A1?cl=en for more details.Recent publications include:Renforth, P., and T. Kruger. "Coupling mineral carbonation and ocean liming." DirectorOxford Geoengineering Institute Sep 2009 - Aug 2010Oxford Geoengineering Institute was set up to facilitate the attainment and distribution of knowledge about geoengineering to scientists, governments, NGOs, corporate entities and the wider public. It was not advocating geoengineering, but rather seeking to carefully research all the implications of geoengineering approaches so as to assess their potential and the risks they carry.

FounderCquestrate Jun 2008 - Aug 2010Cquestrate was set up to research a proposed technique to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, by adding alkalinity to seawater. This enhances the capacity of the ocean to act as a carbon sink and simultaneously counteracts ocean acidification. See www.cquestrate.com for more details
