During my graduation project at the art academy I focussed mainly on the way we consume media nowadays, with an emphasis on the subconscious consumption of imagery due to the seamless integration of technology in our lives. I felt that I sometimes had memories without knowing where they originated from. Was this memory my own or did it enter my mind when someone showed me a video on their phone real quick, did I saw it briefly on facebook while scrolling in the timeline yesterday? To play with this notion I wanted to have a multitude of computers scattered through an exhibition space, playing and stopping youtube videos (which I selected and curated) at the correct time. To achieve this I needed some sort of app that starts/continues a video-playlist on all computers while at the same time being able to edit the playlists from a centralised database. This shifted the project from not only a narrative point of view to a technical one as well. I got introduced to the landscape of apps, devices and data and the possible issues that came along with it. Because of (the struggle of) making this app I started to see the beauty of this empty infrastructure, one that doesn’t contain any information by itself but merely redirects its given input to its given output. I realised the endless possibilities that coding could give me and thus the seed for my interest in being able to write code was planted.Fastforwarding to 15 months of working as a customer service representative, following my graduation. I felt I really missed the element of creating something, of solving long term problems.I decided it was time for a career switch which resulted in a re-orientation of how I could pursue my need to create, while also extending my toolset to create with. Quite quickly I realized that becoming a developer would put me in a position where I could do so. I started a study to become a full stack developer, with the dream to gain the skills to create platforms/infrastructures like my graduation project all by myself. I want to be able to express myself as a developer the same way I’m able to as an artist, to be able to control the narrative to inform people as well as the technology to reach them.
