Tim Lawrence successfully completed an indentured apprenticeship in Scientific Glassblowing at WIKA (formerly Dobbie Instruments P/L) which included skill modules heat and temperature measurement, scientific instrumentation, calibration of precision temperature and pressure devices, and NATA signatory in Heat and Temperature measurement. A 10 year trade background in Scientific Glassblowing and Scientific Instrumentation gave Tim the foundation to start his own business (Protolab P/L) in the manufacture of components for cold cathode lighting, hot cathode spectroscopic light sources and commercial fluorescent lighting. While Tim remained the Technical Director at Protolab, he accepted a contract with Photron P/L to establish an offshore manufacturing operation in Thailand for light sources used in Atomic Absorption (AA) and UV-visible spectrophotometers. After a short period as Factory Manager at the Melbourne operation, Tim was seconded to Thailand as the Technology Manager at the Hollow Cathode Lamp Co. Ltd. to drive strategic direction and executive leadership in the establishment of their stand-alone manufacturing facility. After completing 3 years in the AA industry Tim joined SGE (Scientific Glass Engineering P/L - now Trajan Scientific) as Glass Technology Manager to direct various manufacturing processes in the fabrication of accessories used in Gas Chromatography and Electrophoresis analysis, which included high-speed redraw of precision Fused Silica Tubing (FST), fabrication of precision micro-bored borosilicate tubing, modification of the surface polarity of FST and deskilling of various in-house manufacturing techniques. After 27 years in scientific instrumentation and a variety of manufacturing industries, Tim decided to tackle the challenging transport industry. After 17 years in car carrying, 14 year as a fleet owner for one of Australia’s largest car carriers (CEVA Vehicle Logistics), Tim currently adds value to the organisation as a driver trainer/assessor, subject matter expert and driver representative for the national linehaul group.
