I’m a commercial litigator and white-collar defence lawyer with a focus on regulatory compliance, investigations and enforcement, principally (but not only) in the financial services space.I’m originally from Hong Kong but grew up in England. I’ve been back in Hong Kong since October 1994. I started as a commercial litigator with an international firm in 1998. My focus on financial services began in 2000, when I joined the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission as an in-house lawyer. Working as a regulator opened my eyes to the intricacies of the financial markets, regulation and the importance of understanding regulatory policy, regulator mindset, market dynamics and mutual respect between regulator and regulatee. Each side has much to learn from the other, and I am a strong believer in regulator-market dialogue.Since then, I have been honing my craft through helping clients with knotty, often “bet the farm / career” and potentially brand-damaging matters which require applying prompt, careful judgement using available data points. When there is a lot at stake, and the pressure is high, teamwork (not just internally within our firm, but also with our clients), a good eye for detail, and an understanding of the micro and the macro and human psychology can be critical to finding the best path through.Notwithstanding 25+ years in this game, I remain hungry - hungry to learn (there remains so much to learn), hungry to walk new ground and hungry to win for our clients!
