Applications Engineering Supervisor
As the Applications Engineering Supervisor, I lead a team of applications engineers in supporting the sales team by providing proposals and bid packages for each of ESS Metron's product lines. We drive toward providing accurate and complete product costing to meet aggressive submission deadlines. I assess incoming opportunities and assign them to the team based complexity and available capacity. Weekly I prepare a report for the executive team detailing the newly entered opportunities to support their strategic marketing discussions. Other responsibilities include optimizing quoting processes to maximize accuracy and efficiency, as well as identifying strategic opportunities for R&D considerations or new/existing market capture.
Application Engineer/Project Manager
My duties as an Applications Engineer include creating proposals and bid packages for low and medium voltage switchgear as well as power distribution centers. I interpret customer supplied drawings, schematics, and specifications to understand customer requirements. These can range from a hand drawn single line or brief email description to hundreds of pages of specifications, cable schedules, and three line schematics. I take that information and create a preliminary equipment layout that meets customer needs while also adhering to industry codes and standards such as IBC, UL, ANSI, IEEE, IECC as well as any local or municipal codes. I price up materials and labor to determine a project cost. Using Microsoft Excel and other tools, I generate proposals for the sales team to send out for bid.As a project manager, I am responsible for the timely completion and profitability of a project from receipt of order to shipment. I act as the conduit of information between the customer and the various departments of ESS Metron. Setting the project schedule and defining progress milestones, I coordinate objectives between the purchasing, engineering, operations, and quality control teams. I also track the material budget for the project, and issue any change orders that develop from evolving customer needs.
Systems/Commissioning Engineer
I worked as a commissioning and system test engineer for Neumann Systems group from June of 2015 through September of 2016. My main responsibilities included the commissioning of systems and equipment, procurement of equipment and maintenance parts, creation and review of test procedures, implementation of tests, creation and review of operation procedures, and basic data analysis of system performance. While there I conducted commissioning tests on pumps, air compressors, belt filters, HEX systems, mist eliminators, and piping systems. I have followed vendor recommended commissioning procedures, worked with vendors on commissioning tasks, and created basic commissioning tests as necessary.System testing was a major part of my responsibilities for spring of 2016. I conducted tests on steam systems, fluid systems, a lime systems, a HEX system and belt filter systems to ensure that the system and equipment is performing to specification. I have written test procedure for a HEX system, as well as modified existing test procedure for the belt filter system to meet changing requirements. I have organized and led fluid systems tests involving coordination between a control center and 4+ operatives in the field. After concluding tests, I created reports incorporating the data from tests to convey the most important aspects of system performance.Along with test procedures, I was also tasked with writing an operating procedure for a belt filter system, and reviewing operating procedures for lime and silo systems.A unique project I have worked was evaluating a incorrectly sized thermostatic mixing valve and modeling its corresponding system to properly size a replacement. This involved modeling a piping system that included both water and lime flow as well as a temperature balance.
Sales Support Engineering Intern
For Eaton Corporation's B-Line division I worked in the Engineering department. My main project was to produce a white paper proving that wind resistance testing for rooftop supports is irrelevant to their application. My secondary duties included helping with various projects for the sustainability and VA/VE teams. I also sat in on new product development meetings. For my white paper, I conducted independent research into fluid dynamics and the force applied to rooftop systems by wind. Using this research, I composed a white paper that provided detailed examples of why testing the wind resistance of rooftop supports does not imply stability in a rooftop environment. I also disproved the validity of a competitors wind testing specification. In sustainability, I created drawings and submittals for custom orders. This included modifying existing drawings to meet customer requirements as well as creating all new drawings for specialized custom parts. I also completed two ECNs for existing products. For VA/VE I worked on a project to reduce the material for an accessory that would yield a material savings of $9,000 annually. In addition, I looked into possible VA/VE savings for several other products, and showed that the proposed actions would not lead to savings. My internship at B-Line provided me with invaluable experience in the engineering field and an insight into the various sections of an engineering department. Composing the white paper taught me to apply scientific principles to real world situations. It also strengthened my ability to do research and present relevant information in an efficient manner. The sustainability and VA/VE projects taught me how interconnected the various engineering teams are, with each other as well as with other departments of the company. I learned to cooperate and coordinate many different departments in order to complete business wide goals.
