I am an optometrist with over 20 years experience in delivering primary eye care, mainly in rural, and regional areas in Australia. I have worked in various settings throughout this time, including corporate, franchise, independent and locum, and as an employee and multi-site owner. I have a keen interest in primary health care delivery, and have always championed our profession as a valuable and accessible way for Australians to make sure they maintain good vision, and good eye health. As part of a primary eye care network with referral ability to secondary and tertiary care, optometry can play a unique role in people seeing well and being productive in our communities. I have been a part of advocacy for our profession being a director on State and National Optometry Australia Boards (President and Deputy President respectively), and I have participated in local health networks, most recently as the North West Tasmanian representative on the Tasmanian Eye Services Network (part of the Tasmanian Clinical Networks Tasmanian Clinical Networks which are a mechanism to engage clinicians, consumers, and policymakers from across the health system to develop, drive and implement clinical quality improvement initiatives, ensure equitable access to health services, ensure consistency of practice across the state and promote sustainability in healthcare).I am currently the Vice President of the Australian College of Optometrists (ACO) – an amazing organisation whose mission is to “improve the eye health and wellbeing of Australian communities through innovation, partnership, and leadership. The ACO is dedicated to providing accessible and affordable eye care, and advancing the profession through world-class research and education.” This utilises our profession to make a difference for those in our community who may find accessing traditional services challenging.
