VIY challenges young people aged 14-24 to learn trade and construction skills through helping to fix local youth and community facilities in need of essential repairs and improvements. Participants are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain vocational City & Guilds skills accreditations, as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities. The majority of young people who take part and benefit are disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training, or at risk of disengagement, and/or unemployed.Since 2011, 500+ VIY projects have been completed throughout the UK, involving and benefitting 10,000+ young people and 1,000+ local professional tradespeople/trade skills mentors.VIY works with a mix of cross-sector partners and funders, including Travis Perkins, City & Guilds, The Careers & Enterprise Company, Nesta, Sport England, Music Venue Trust and the GLA. We also partner with multiple local authorities and building contractors throughout the country.
