Noridian is a contractor that processes Medicare claims with government sponsored systems. Those systems need people on both sides to help make sure they work correctly. I am part of a team of 8, which work together to test the changes implemented, answer in house questions on its operation and automate claims processing and claim review. Each quarter I am given test situations and I decide what needs to be tested. I key the claims in our testing environment and document that they processed correctly. During this process I make sure the impacted processing areas have the information they need to update their processes. After the release is complete, I will collect all data related to that change to document the completed change and file the information.

As Written Redeterminations Support, I inspect appeals basic elements that would help the Redeterminations Examiner know what to expect from the appeal and so complete it quicker and easier. Using my knowledge of OnBase I fix many of the workflow errors that I ran across freeing others to continue working. I redesigned the documentation ordering process by reorganizing and reusing information that already existed making the letters easier to create and more consistent. I share the knowledge I have and before presenting a negative condition, I define the condition and offer possible paths to improve the negative condition. Using this proactive approach has earned me the “Employee of the Month” award several times. I was loaned out to the Qualified Independent Contractor (QIC) team for over a year and left them with a spreadsheet that helped with speed and consistency by helping to format the numbers and alert the indexer to common errors in the indexing process. While loaned to the QIC team, I helped set up a process to handle Remands. I help foster the Support team environment we enjoy by being available to answer questions and asking a few questions myself. I also share information as needed to help the group to process consistently.

I processed and documented security for six production systems, answered Help Desk research questions and production issues. I was also assigned many projects that created and automated procedures for our group. One project required me to perform a system security audit for OnBase with no standardized methods and relied heavily on my trainers’ memory for who owned each piece of information. After attempting what was improbable for a person new to the company, I assessed what I was asked to do and the information that was available. Then I restarted the audit using standards and reproducible methods. I queried and merged data from separate systems and created custom macros to produce a finished product. Once I had a model to work from, I went back to my trainer and Team Leader to present what I saw as the problem and the model I was using to create a completed audit. Then I documented the entire process with standards outlined so the Support group could work as a unit to apply this model for each of the systems required. I worked directly in a team of four, communicating and coordinating the various tasks that needed to be done. I also worked with others in the OnBase Imaging team of 25 was well as communicated with people companywide to help them as a resource. The PDAC team especially liked to use me to create regularly delivered reports. The process I developed removed all the merge, query and macro information and placed the data in a common folder with a report date so all they had to do was access it in ways that were routine for them. I documented all of these reports as well.

I handled the servicing of the sewing and embroidering machines. I solely managed the service inventory, kept service records, taught customers about their machines service requirements, installed the new phone system, maintained the office computers and created the networking. To keep my service records I created a system with MS Access where I could get cost center and service history information much quicker. There were two significant differences about this job. One was that I was now communicating with a different group of people. My first job, which was for Concurrent Computer Corporation, I worked with engineers and technicians. My next job for Cass County, North Dakota, I worked with business and technical people. At Rae Bon Quilt and Sewing Center I was working with home industry and home crafters with a few commercial applications sprinkled in. I had to learn their motivations and how to talk sewing. The second difference was the confidence gained when I understood that the problem solving skills gained in computers, in fact, had a wide application in everything instead of just the computers systems where I was used to applying them.

As Computer Operator and then Network Specialist, my first task was to transfer my knowledge of mini main frame systems to varied PC based systems. Becoming competent quickly, I was promoted to Network Specialist within a year.I maintained the web site, administered the Lucent Phone system as well as maintained the voicemail system; made all phone wiring connections, and ran the phone billing reports. I maintained the desktop and laptop PC’s, application software, network connectivity and some cable wiring. I installed the IIS web server and maintained it along with the two web sites it hosted. One was Cass County’s and one for Cass Youth Court. I also did the AS/400 and server backups with tape rotations. I documented my processes and presented a beginning computer class to a group of County employees before they received their first computers. I ordered all the office supplies for the department, tracked the purchasing, inventory and accounts on the IBM AS/400. I also managed the inventory and use of the telephone system parts and replacement telephones.

This is where I learned and learned to apply my foundational testing, technical and customer skills. Our mini mainframe computers were used in a variety of chemical, engineering and business applications. Each environment tended to have its own set of special challenges and connected devices. The only practical way to know if a problem was in our devices or the customers was to learn about both and how they interfaced. It was a great way to expand my knowledge. As Customer Service Engineer I installed, certified and maintained the computer systems for time critical customer installations including the Michigan State Lottery. I managed a two person satellite office; guided and supported other employees in the performance of their duties; and managed/organized inventory with all supporting paperwork. On these computers I was reading microcode, reading hardware schematics, scoping hardware signals, rebuilding and reconfiguring Operating Systems, writing software loops for testing, planning installations and supervising installations.
