Associate Project Manager
As the Associate Project Manager, I was a member of the Science and Solutions team which served as a mini-think thank within the organization. We were responsible for researching and verifying everything The Climate Reality Project produced. My research provided content and structure to almost all of Climate Reality's campaigns and programs including numerous Climate Reality Leadership Corps trainings, 24 Hours of Reality, Campus Corps, Pricing Pollution, 100% Committed, and I AM PRO SNOW. Additionally, I was responsible for vetting and approving press releases, possible speakers, social media posts, emails, and e-books. More specifically, my role as the Associate Project Manager focused on project managing former US Vice President Al Gore's slideshow, the one which many people saw for the first time in An Inconvenient Truth. I oversaw the process from start to finish, while managing stakeholder expectations and building processes to increase the efficiency and utility of the final presentation. During my tenure I oversaw and led the processing of over 200 of Mr. Gore's slideshows. My final responsibility was to serve as the organization's presentation resource. In this capacity, I created all of the CEO's presentations for audiences ranging from trainings of over 2,000, to forums like the UNFCCC COP and the World Bank, as well as board member and donor meetings. Furthermore, I assisted staff in every department with creating and customizing presentations for internal and external use. Starting in 2017, I presented at every Climate Reality Leadership Corps training on how to customize the slideshow and be an effective presenter.
Consultant
As a consultant to The Climate Reality Project, I was responsible for curating Reality Drop on a daily basis while assisting with other research tasks as needed. Reality Drop was an anti-denial of climate change campaign that also served as an education tool. Through learning about popular misconceptions and myths surrounding climate change, as well as providing up-to-date news and scientific research, Reality Drop made combating climate denial fun! This position allowed me to gain an in-depth knowledge on the popular myths and misconceptions often promulgated by those who deny climate change and made me a more effective communicator around this complicated issue.
Sustainability Coordinator
Surprisingly, my time with Petal to the Metal began by chance. I was in need of a part-time job, so I could intern in Washington, DC and still pay the bills, but the only specialized skill I had was floral arranging thanks to my summer job working at Whole Foods. I interviewed, auditioned, and was hired as a part-time designer, but my boss quickly realized that while I was adept at arranging flowers, I had other more valuable skills. With an academic background in sustainability, I was able to apply the concepts I had helped Stetson University instantiate at this floral business! I began by tackling high return-on-investment projects around the studio, and when the owner saw the shops overhead drop, I was promoted to Sustainability Coordinator. I quickly drafted a sustainability master plan for the business, and while still helping with the flower arranging, I began to actualize the plan. I completed an energy and greenhouse gas audit while founding a composting program for our green waste, expanding the recycling program, and optimizing delivery driver routes. The audit revealed that some of the older appliances were drastically increasing the electricity costs. Utilizing this new data, I was able to outline a pay-back period if these appliances were upgraded, and we began to replace some of the biggest offenders. While instituting these programs, I hosted monthly lunch-ins where I discussed sustainability in the workplace and the role of the staff in ensuring these programs were successful.
Science And Solutions Intern
As an intern with the Science and Solutions Team at The Climate Reality Project, I worked on a variety of projects and campaigns during my nine-month tenure. I was initially hired to focus on 24 Hours of Reality, an annual live broadcast where former US Vice-President Al Gore discusses the state of climate change around the globe with celebrities, dignitaries, and activists. The 2013 theme was “The Cost of Carbon” and in my role I was tasked with researching the impact of climate change on every continent. I prepared an extensive briefing document on this topic that was utilized to create videos, prepare interview questions, and inform Chairman Gore’s slideshow. Additionally, I compiled thousands of impact statistics that were featured in a constantly scrolling ticker along the bottom the screen. After 24 Hours of Reality premiered, I was invited to stay on with Climate Reality and continue working on a number of other projects and campaigns. In this expanded role, I continued to assist with vetting and approval of content, but was also responsible for curating Reality Drop two to three times a week and authoring a weekly international update on global climate change policy. Furthermore, I completed memos which synthesized recent academic studies and organizational or governmental reports into an accessible format for senior staffers.
Climate Change Policy Intern
I interned at the US Environmental Protection Agency's Headquarter Office with the Office of Water as a part of the Water Policy Staff, Climate Change Division with a specific focus on climate change adaptation. With the release of the National Water Program 2012 Strategy: Response to Climate Change imminent, I was tasked with researching adaptation metrics and assisting the Water Policy Staff in evaluating program offices' and regions' initiatives. This research produced a white paper that informed an update to EPA's definition of adaptation and how the agency assessed climate change adaptation across all of its projects and programs. While this was the focus of my internship, I also found time to write a 'Greenversation' blog post, created a series of public assessment documents, and worked with EPA's regions to feature their climate achievements in regular newsletters and on the website. I was also extremely fortunate to attend high-level meetings - both inside the EPA and at CEQ - that focused on topics ranging from renewable energy to tribal and environmental justice.
Lamprey Climate Fellow
During the summer of 2012, I worked as the Lamprey Fellow with Clean Air-Cool Planet and focused on the CHEFS (CHarting Emissions from Food Services) tool. This digital tool was the first of its kind and allowed universities to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions created by the campus food service sector. In my time as the Lamprey Fellow, I focused on two main projects: the first was expanding CHEFS capabilities by incorporating new life-cycle analysis data. My other focus was on creating a qualitative labeling system which allowed the data output from the tool to be easily expressed to consumers. Finally, I created a best practice list of sustainable food service initiatives, in addition to a LinkedIn group aimed at promoting increased dialogue and ambition between our partner universities. I was invited to AASHE's 2012 annual conference to present on my work.Beyond my work with CHEFS, I was also invited to assist Clean Air-Cool Planet's climate change adaptation project. The organization partnered with a small town and assisted them in creating a climate change adaptation plan, documented the process, and hoped to create a model that could be replicated in towns across the country. I assisted with meetings, stakeholder outreach, and drafting the plan.
