Basic Training: Recruit Training Command, Orlando, FLPersonnelman "A" School: Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, MSUSS SPARTANBURG COUNTY (LST-1192)Upon graduation of boot camp and "A" school, I was assigned to the USS SPARTANBURG COUNTY, an amphibious tank landing ship home ported at the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, VA.Every sailor has a day-to-day job, which is their rate, mine...a Personnelman. As a "PN" I was responsible for all administrative and personnel related matters for 240 enlisted.We also have a battle station during "General Quarters"... mine was Gun Mount Captain for a 3"/50 enclosed twin mount. I received my qualifications at Naval Air Station, Oceana, VA. Other duties and accomplishments: - I qualified as a ship's navigator - A member of the ship's self defense force team. - I completed two Mediterranean Amphibious Readiness Group (MARG) deployments in 1987 and 1989, visiting several ports in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia. - I received the Special Operations Service Ribbon as part of Operation Checkmate 1989.
