The project, was a multi consultant project team, looking to solve basement flooding within the catchment area. Certain characteristics of the catchment have been identified which place 2000 properties at risk of sewer flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. These characteristics include the conversion of watercourses to form part of the sewerage network, the size and impact of the wider catchment on the study area and network limitations including magnitude and direction of flows and available pumping capacity to relieve the storm network to the River Thames.During the project the team developed a methodology for optioneering a detailed bottom up approach to ensure that all opportunities were considered with each phase providing further knowledge and understand feeding into the next. The overall proposed solution was a programme of work comprising a combination of a strategic tunnel with associated pumping station, localised sewerage works, four local schemes, and a number of FLIPs.• Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) Due to the hydraulic characteristics of the system, the opportunities for using SUDs are limited since the magnitude of volume that is required to be managed is so significant as to render them very expensive. However, in one location, the local geography, sewer connection arrangement and hydraulic conditions allow a SuDS scheme to be implemented.• Four local schemes will reduce the risk of flooding by easing the flow at pinch points.• FLIPs Targeted installation of antiflood devices (‘flooding local improvement projects’, known as ‘FLIPs’) will prevent further sewer flooding in properties with particularly deep basements.
