The project started by exploring ways to improve on existing upper limb prostheses making use of the enabling technologies of 3D printing. The end result was a 3D printed upper arm socket that could accommodate 2 years of growth for children, reducing visits to the orthopedic center while increasing comfort. A new socket was designed making use of auxetic meta-materials. A thermo-adaptive socket was designed based on a 3D scan of the residual limb. By 3D printing an auxetic cell structure of Polycaprolactone (PCL) two years of pediatric growth could be accommodated. The socket can be adapted to the growth of the limb after being placed in a bath of water at 55°C. A socket prototype was designed in collaboration with orthopedic center De Hoogstraat.
