Tim Speer has worked for Austal over three decades in a variety of senior management and executive roles. The Austal journey has included the transition from a privately owned local business, to a public company, to a multi-national organisation and has provided valuable exposure to every aspect of corporate governance. Tim has had the opportunity to work across the world with customers in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas, and has an excellent understanding of the cultural characteristics of different nationalities and their potential influences. Roles have included Head of Design, Product and Production Development, US Programs Management, US Design Manager, Head of Technical Sales and Head of Design Development. Most recently, he has led the preparation of Research and Development and design concepts to capture all new commercial and naval contracts. Past successes include leading Austal’s Cape Class Patrol Boat Team during the capture phase, the award of two High Speed Support Vessels for the Royal Navy of Oman, the award of four patrol vessels for the Armed Forces of Malta and the capture of the fourteen vessel Armidale Class Patrol Boat Program. The most significant contribution to Austal’s overall success occurred in the United States where Tim led the Austal Littoral Combat Ship team as the program manager. This involvement in the US business continued through the LCS design period and into construction of USS Independence, with the establishment of the US based design team. Tim then led the Austal Joint High Speed Vessel team, which competed for and ultimately won a ten ship program. Working with the US government and Australian government customer has provided a thorough understanding of the acquisition process and effective management of the customer interface before, during and following the formal tendering process. Prior to joining Austal, Tim moved to Western Australia in 1993 to establish a design facility for Sea Spray Boats, which delivered a number of aluminium ferries and patrol vessels to customers in Asia. Tim also worked in yacht design and the Ship Classification businesses, early in his career.
