About Tim Stephens
When it comes down to it, I am a lifelong learner and a problem solver. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and loved the challenges that were associated with it. I particularly enjoyed “building my toolkit” in organic chemistry to solve difficult mechanistic problems. After my degree in chemistry I pursued a Master of Information at the University of Toronto, hoping to continue to develop my bag of tricks to answer different kinds of questions. Lately, I have become passionate about helping others build their own toolkits. I have recently acquired a Subject Restricted Independent School Teaching Certificate and have been passing my knowledge on to the next generation of scientists in British Columbia, Canada. One of my favourite things about teaching has been the questions from my students – they constantly show me there is still a lot to learn. In my spare time I like to ride my mountain bike, coach rugby, and explore Vancouver Island. Please reach out if you would like to connect!

Science Teacher
CurrentIn my second year of full-time teaching, I focused on Science 8 and Science 10. I concentrated on developing lesson plans that were interactive, conversation-based, and informative. Science 8 and Science 10 are interesting courses due to their overarching nature -- students get to learn about physics, chemistry, earth science, and biology. Outside of the classroom, I co-led the Robotics after-school program. This year we did exceptionally well, reaching the world championships in Dallas, Texas!
Teacher
After attaining my Subject Restricted Independent School Teaching Certificate, I taught Science 9 and Environmental Science 11. I focused on designing lessons that encouraged students to think critically, creatively, independently, and collaboratively. I was quick to pivot to a hybrid system during an uptick in COVID-19 cases, and I worked closely with colleagues to unify course direction. Outside of the classroom, I continued to coach rugby and perform duties in the grade 8 boys house.
Assistant House Director
At this time, I was given the opportunity to facilitate the creation of a new grade 8 boys boarding house. I contributed to house culture by aiding in the selection of a new motto, symbol, and hymn. I lived in the house, and supervised 28 grade 8 boys (17 of whom lived at the school full-time). I was also an active member of the school community, regularly attending chapel services, meals, and rugby practices.
Senior Intern At Shawnigan Lake School
As a Senior Intern at Shawnigan Lake School, my main responsibility was covering classes for a variety of teachers; however, my focus was in the science department. After school, I was involved in two extra-curricular activities: rugby and robotics. In addition to this, I was also an active member of boarding school life. I supervised students in multiple houses, attended gatherings, and co-led a trip through the Rocky Mountains during a half-term break.
Research Assistant
Under the supervision of a department professor, this project focused on reducing ice adhesion through the application of thin polymer films. During my research, I gained valuable experience in atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning colorimetry (DSC). Various materials were synthesized, tested, and the results were compiled into a final report. The findings of this project were presented and defended at the "CHEM4491 Research Day", as well as at the annual Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC), which was held at the University of Toronto, Scarborough campus.
Water Quality Analyst
This was an internship I completed during my undergraduate degree. I was working at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters, and, more specifically, for the National Laboratory for Environmental Testing. I focused on analyzing water samples from all over the country and became proficient in multiple analyses such as: biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, total volatile suspended solids, total solids, and total dissolved solids. I was also in charge of analyzing pH, alkalinity, and conductivity through the use of an automated instrument from MANTECH - the PC Titrate. In addition to these quality tests, I learned how to input and report data, prepare for audits, and write standard operating procedures.
Shipping And Receiving
I worked at Aquiform during the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016. At Aquiform, I shipped pool-related products to various cities in BC and Alberta, and I gained knowledge in the handling of chemicals and the delivery of dangerous goods.
