Director Of Conservation
CurrentThe Director of Conservation is responsible for developing and overseeing the zoo’s field conservation programs, including promoting these efforts to appropriate audiences. This position orchestrates the zoo’s travel program. This position also provides input to interpretation of educational messages, and researches, writes, and designs non-personal interpretation, as well as performs other duties as required.The following description breaks down the Director’s duties by responsibilities: • Develops, maintains, and oversees the zoo's field conservation programs. • Establishes and maintains excellent and consistent communications between the zoo and various conservation partners. • Actively builds relationships with conservation colleagues at other zoos, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. • Manages budget for conservation efforts to insure worthwhile outcomes.• Develops related policies for staff participation in field conservation or related efforts. • Involved in green team efforts to reduce environmental impact. • Identifies and helps promote conservation actions zoo guests can personally engage in.• Actively participates in conservation committees or other related work for likeminded groups including AZA, CISMA, FAZA, MFG, ZCOG, etc.• Attends and represents the zoo at appropriate meetings, e.g. AZA, FWC, etc.• Coordinates the zoo’s travel program including preparation of all sales materials, arranging pre and post safari events, presenting programs to sell trips, and hosting safaris as needed.• Researches and designs graphics for Safari Canyon theater including acquiring digital assets and creating graphics and editing video sequences. • Researches and writes standard animal identification signs and designs all additional historical markers, interpretive signs, plant identification signs, and incidental signs.• Participates with other staff in creating the interpretive message.
