Serve on the Executive Leadership Team for the 2020 Census. Ensure that new geospatial data, technology, and research and methods and are kept current with innovations in the larger geospatial community. Perform research and developmental activities in the broad area of geospatial science that include exploring methodological, technical and substantive issues relating to the creation, collection and integration of geospatial and statistical information by the Census Bureau. Serve as the Department of Commerce’s senior agency official for geospatial information to enable alignment and integration of geospatial information management. Represent the agency on geospatial areas of interest within the international community including the United Nation’s Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM). Contribute expertise in international geospatial requirements for conducting statistical activities and national mapping efforts.

Executive responsibility for geographic programs for censuses and statistical surveys. As the Census Bureau’s chief geographer, responsible for directing development and implementation of geographic and cartographic activities to support the Census Bureau’s data collection, tabulation, and dissemination programs for the United States and its territories. Responsible for the Census Bureau’s MAF/TIGER System, a national geospatial database of addresses, boundaries and roads. Proposed and implemented geospatial data improvements that are estimated to save over $900 million for the 2020 Census. Directed management improvements to addresses, boundaries, and a complete road network for the United States. Address data comprises postal and location information for every residence. Boundaries are of legal, administrative, and statistical areas such as the 39,000 functioning governments (counties, cities, towns, etc.); administrative areas (voting districts, congressional districts, school districts, etc.); and statistical areas (urban areas, census tracts and over 11 million census blocks). The road data includes over 6.2 million miles of roads and their attributes used for field work and boundary delineation.

Serve as a Co-Chair of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). Contribute to setting the agenda for the development of global geospatial information and to promote its use to address key global challenges. Provide executive leadership in geospatial information that contributes to coordination among Member States, and between Member States, international organizations, the academic network and the private sector. Serve as the Head of Delegation for the U.S. on the UN-GGIM.
