Biomedical Engineer with 18 years of experience in conducting counter-terrorism and force protection research in human vulnerability to primary blast, blunt trauma, ballistic, fragment, toxic and thermal threats. Dr. Walilko is a co-investigator in two research programs tasked to correlate environmental parameters to changes in neurological function. For these programs one of Dr. Walilko's tasks is leading a team of engineers in the development of a research-based blast overpressure system. The system is being used for collecting overpressure data on Breachers exposed to multiple low-level blasts which are part of their training. This data is being correlated to medically relevant signals obtained from neuro-cognitive testing, neuro-imaging, auditory/vestibular assessments as well as biomarkers taken at the time of exposure. In addition to this groundbreaking research, Dr. Walilko has several programs directed at improving the personal protective gear worn by the military and first responders using mechanical and biological surrogates. One project was the evaluation of the effectiveness of tactical ballistic gear (helmet and soft body armor) in a blast environment. In this effort, histological analysis of the biological tissue revealed, in the absence of blunt trauma, evidence of neurological injuries at overpressure levels well-below the lethal ranges for thoracic injuries. Prior to joining ARA, Dr. Walilko was actively engaged in research seeking to establish human tolerance levels to automotive, sports and non-lethal impacts.Specialties: Applied Biomechanics
