I am a seasoned professional with over four decades of experience in architecture, software development, and building information modelling (BIM), currently serving as Director & Partner at ActivePLAN. My career began in the late 1970s with foundational training in architecture, including a practical year out during my studies. I qualified as an Architect in the mid-1980s & have since worked across various architectural firms & local authorities, designing innovative & sustainable housing projects.I have been an early adopter of technology throughout my career. I purchased my first computer in 1982 and began using CAD software at a local authority on a PC shortly thereafter, marking the start of my journey in combining digital tools with architectural design. This early embrace of technology positioned me as a forward-thinking professional, always eager to explore new ways to enhance design processes and project outcomes. In the late 1980s, I transitioned to Hong Kong, where I joined a software vendor pioneering one of the first building modeling systems, Sonata. My expertise in digital construction technologies expanded significantly during this time, and I was recognized as a power user while working across Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and Thailand. Upon returning to the UK, I continued to advance BIM technologies with software vendors, co-founding BIW in 1999 to develop innovative project extranet software.Since co-founding ActivePlan in 2002, my focus has been on developing web applications for facility management across the retail, education, and commercial sectors. Over the past decade, I have led the Research team in developing integrated web services and applying AI and machine learning to enhance data capture and building management. My passion for innovation drives my work, ensuring our solutions remain at the forefront of the industry.I am also deeply committed to sustainable design and construction, both professionally and personally. In my own household, we have embraced sustainable technologies as a practical and cost-saving approach. We switched to an electric car in 2015 to reduce expenses, a decision that has proven financially beneficial. In 2022, we installed solar panels and a battery, further saving money and adding value to our property. Additionally, since 2019, I have implemented a series of sensors in my home to monitor various environmental factors and even trained a language understanding model to interact with this data. These efforts reflect my commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable and efficient living.
