Taylor Preston is a processor and exporter of meat products. The company processes approx. 1.5m animals, employs 850 staff and exports to around 60 countries.Staring as management accountant I was appointed CFO in 1998. One if the reasons the company has thrived in a notoriously competitive industry is their ability to react quickly to the changing environment. Margins could change very quickly and there were many variables involved (Prices in many markets, FX, weather, local conditions). For example, something which was making a good margin on Friday, may be a poor margin on Monday. This meant that the business relied heavily on us for getting quick, reliable and sometimes detailed information, which made this a challenging and enjoyable role.It was here that I started using Jet Reports. I was responsible for implementing a new ERP system (MS Dynamics NAV), and a key part of this was good reporting and analytics. After some research, we purchased Jet Reports. BBC were undergoing a major change in the way departments managed their budgets. Instead of beaing allocated a budget based on the prior year, they would create their own budget based on what they needed to run their department. The new system, called "Producers choice" could buy and sell services between the departments. For example, Radio 3 would purchase programs or studio time from the Drama department. Certain services could be purchased externally, which meant the departments needed to provide value for money. Out role was to assist the department managers (who were mostly non-financial) through this process of creating budgets.

Chrysalis is principally engaged in various areas of entertainment business such as product distribution, artist management, music recording and music publishing. Duties included overall responsibility for accounting department (four people), development of a three year strategic plan, statutory reporting and year-end audit; preparation of budgets, forecasts, strategic plans.
