Morphed from usage data analysis to business intelligence, getting an on-the-job MBA helping teams track and understand growth- Managed build out of Office's new BI data & reporting system- Work with teams to identify opportunities, define success, review impact, forecast growth targets- Designed reporting, scorecards, PowerBI dashboards, data portals, and data visualizations- Developed and ran Office's leadership scorecard and monthly reviews

Eventually, analyzing usage data within Office became so sought after, we needed a whole team- Co-founded the Data & Analytics Group (DNA) within Office Research- Managed research projects to understand usage, satisfaction, and user needs from telemetry- Worked with teams like Word, Excel, Online, others to identify success metrics and KPIs- Analyzed usage data to understand user behavior, develop insights, and impact teams' designs

Usage data analysis was in its infancy, but it had been so critical to design of the ribbon, I decided to double-down on it and make sure everyone in Office had access to it- Developed Office's usage data reporting to understand which parts of the product were being used, how, and how frequently- Democratized the analysis of usage data by building out self-serve analysis portals and reports - Conducted research projects to understand how we could use data to understand user satisfaction- Stretched the telemetry needed to understand product usage, becoming a designated company expert for Office's primary usage telemetry

Ever wonder how Office decided to move from menus to a ribbon of tabs? That was my team!- Usability Research Lead for Office 2007's New UI - the 'ribbon' that replaced menus- Managed team responsible for conducting all usability lab tests, design research, eye-tracking studies, focus groups, site visits, and surveys for the new UI across all development phases- Identified the user requirements for a new UI, user models, early prototyping testing, iterative feedback, and eventually user acceptance of the new UI- Established usage data as a viable source of design input alongside canoncial usability methods

Brought in to be the first Usability Engineer for Mac Office...and ended up with a lot of firsts :-)- Became first Usbability Engineer for other products like SharePoint, OneNote, Entourage, and a couple products that never saw the light of day...but from which we learned a lot- Focused on user decision modeling, cognitive walkthroughs, heuristic evaluation--like once a 12 foot flow chart that showed how users make decisions on how to collaborate- Even back then, what excited me most was developing visualizations that turned data and research results into something that gave teams new insights, feature ideas, and design inspiration

When you work in a startup and say things like, "It would be easier to write the documentation if you designed it this way...", they say "then you do it" and put you in charge of interface design.That's when you realize you need more foundation and this 'new-ish' software usability thing is scratching an itch, so you go back to school at night to get your Masters in Human Factors...and you start falling in love with the idea that you can build models that describe and predict behavior.
